For SD video, I’d go with MiniDV over MPEG2 any day of the week.

If you go HDV, you’ll be capturing an MPEG2 Transport Stream (.mts).

Just a little clarification: MPEG2 should show up on a default installation of Vegas. It’s just not “unlocked” automatically unless DVD Architect is also installed and registered. But it should be there! Same is true with AC3 – there but not automatically unlocked unless DVD Architect is installed and registered.

I do agree that DVD Architect should be installed and registered if you wish to use MPEG2 (although MPEG2 should be registerable separately from Vegas). But it should be a pickable item anyway. I’d try reinstalling.

You have to render to a format that can handle the alpha channel. Try rendering to Uncompressed AVI, go into the preferences, and make sure the option to include Alpha Channel is turned on.

Since you’re capturing DV, you ARE using the EXTERNAL capture app???

A velocity envelope also works.

Remember that that area is resizable. You’ve resized it to nothing. Go to the bottom of the box and click and drag upwards to bring it back.

I tend to just use the volume envelope. My “four points” tool in Excalibur can add the proper nodes around a selected area. So if I want an entire clip raised or lowered, I can double-click it (to select it) and then run the four points tool.

Plus, don’t forget the volume envelope is automatable!
