? New Camera – DV-AVI vs. MPEG-2 Capture
Hi, this may not be the exact forum for this but there is no forum for sony camcorders and codec discussions, so I am in the process of selecting a SONY DV camcorder, yes there’s all kinds of recording options out there – Memory Stick(4GB-8GB), HD, DVD and…mini-DV, which outputs DV(AVI). WHAT is the BEST way to go here (Or do all roads lead to Rome) assuming I will be doing LOTS AND LOTS of capture into Sony Vegas and rendering out of THAT. Are there advantages to capturing inherently less compressed DV/AVI vs MPEG-2? No advantages? Would like to get a few different points of view why vs. why not. Thank you……………

For SD video, I’d go with MiniDV over MPEG2 any day of the week.
If you go HDV, you’ll be capturing an MPEG2 Transport Stream (.mts).

If you havent purchaced a Camera yet, I would recommend an HDV over DV camera. I have a Cannon GL1 and a Sony HVR-A1U and I don’t even use the Cannon anymore except when I need a live preview in Ultra 2. With the HDV camera you can still record in DV or down convert if needed too. The prices of HDV cameras are close to the better DV cameras now. I would stick with a tape based camera opposed to hard drive cameras. Some downfalls with the latter are unsupported file types with many NLE’s and if you record one long shot to a hard drive based camera, you have to take the whole file to the computer even if you only need small pieces.
