Throw out the USB cable and capture via firewire (especially if you like to keep your hair). Then you won’t have the issues like the one you’re having now.

Multiple ways:
1. Select the video or audio and press “U” to “Ungroup” them. Then you can use them independently.
2. Turn on “Ignore Event Grouping” (it’s a button on the toolbar) and then you can use them independently. Just remember to turn that option back OFF when you’re done.

If you’re using the Pro version, a script could also be helpful in this situation. For example, start Vegas, run the script, and it could create a specific number of tracks and even add effects/media to those tracks as desired.

I, personally, like the two files kept together. That way when I’m done with an audio clip, I go to that folder, delete the WAV file, and also delete the SFK file at the same time. If it was somewhere else, no I have to go to TWO locations to find the second file. And if it’s some obscure name (like happens when importing from CD if you don’t rename the file), it would be even harder to find. I don’t see this as “faulty design”.

My advice is DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT. Let it play choppy! If you need to see it smooth, RAM render it and look at it. Once you’re done, render the whole thing out and it will ALL be smooth then.

Mine has MP4 under both MainConcept and Sony renderers. Are you talking Vegas PRO 8? Or Vegas MOVE STUDIO? That could be a difference as well.

Vegas Pro 8 can already import and export 10-bit video. It can also render in 32bit space. And the 64-bit version was demoed at NAB and announced to be released later this year.

Actually, they *CAN* add extra functionality to Vegas. For example, Multi-cam (a new function) was added direct in Vegas in Vegas Pro 8. However, Vegas has had terrific multi-cam abilities since Vegas 4 – via scripting.
Look at the photo montage tools in both Excalibur and Ultimate S.
Look at the batch rendering functionality.
These are all extra functions that would not exist without scripting. Yes, the same “steps” can be done manually but would take a LOT more work to do so. However, they also do what you said: repeat some functions very quickly and easily.

If you want specific TRACKS in your template, you’ll need to just save a base project and then each time open that base project and do a “File – Save As” first thing so you don’t overwrite your template.
If you want to save a screen layout (so you could have multiple layouts), then you would do what you’re doing. To see what you’ve done work, change the size of some windows and then do an ALT-D Number and your layout will be restored.
