Sorry Peter, maybe I wasn’t being clear enough. I was comparing shooting in HDV mode and downconverting to DV (SD) in the same camera.
I think that’s what the question was mostly about, but he may have also meant to compare *any* SD (including Digibeta)
to HDV.

That is a wide ranging statement. Give me a Digibeta shoot, 10bit edit & DVD master & put that up against the same in HDV.

Haven’t done it myself yet, but there are lots of posts here and other forums/lists where people say they are
generally mastering out to HD with a rented deck, or in the case of DVDs, the most common opinion
is that shooting in HDV and downconverting gives a much better final SD image for DVD than shooting in SD.

Just in case you don’t know, *all* firewire ports use the same bus, so when you say you only have
the AJA connected to the FW port, do you mean to *any* FW port, or just the one the AJA is connected to?
If you have another FW device connected to another internal FW port, it’s really using the same FW as your
AJA.

There are a lot of flavors of MPEG (1 2, 1 Part2, 4, etc). Motion JPEG compresses each
frame separately, giving you 24, 25, 30 (for example) distinct frames per second, while
MPEG looks at a number of frames together and, depending on which MPEG, compresses
groups of frames together so they’re interconnected, which is what made editing MPEG
difficult until recently.

Two pass VBR is broken in Compressor 2. It sucks. Use CBR.

A respected compressionist, Randy Tinfow, has said that the scaling in FCP ain’t so good. He recommends
AE for scaling. You might want to compare.

I was chairman of my small town’s selectboard in the late 80s-early 90s, and I got the town
it’s first computer (a Gateway 33mhz with a 40MB drive). The city manager of the next town (a big city of 2,000 people) tried to convince
me that we only needed a DOS based computer to run everything because his police, fire, water, tax departments,
and everything else was run from one computer with a 10MB (MB!) drive.

My first editing system was version 1.0 of Media 100 and the 4 Seagate Barracuda 3gig SCSI media drives cost $3,600 (each!) in 1993.
$14,400 for less than 12 formatted gigs.

You’re not going to get an FLV file (even with the ON2VP6, in my humble opinion) to be as small and good looking as H.264. Have you considered WM9?
It sounds like if you’re using H.264 and thinking of ON2VP6 Flash then you’re not really concerned with reaching a big audience, which WM9 is good for,
but it’s also a very good format/codec with a small file size.
