As Bouke said, lots of cameras are switchable. For 50hz European fluorescents, set your shutter speed to 100 to avoid the pumping
    lights.

Shane, what are you talking about? The MXO2 and MXO2Mini (the “later” models) both “go out to computer monitors”.

[Shane Ross] “NTSC…Computer monitors aren’t good for CC. If you have the original MXO they will do a pretty decent job, but without…ugh. And the later MXO models don’t go out to computer monitors.”

I guess it partly depends on when (it isn’t light very long, if at all, in the winter!). You said near Alaska and boat, so I’ll have to say from my 5 years living there that where there’s water (meaning around the middle to southern shores) there are more clouds than sun. So, in the summer you’ll have clouds which cut down the solar gain considerably, and in the winter you still have clouds, coupled with darkness. Do the boats have motors to use for charging, or are they motorless? Interior Alaska has a lot more sunshine in the summer.

Yes you can reduce quality. Use one of the presets, duplicate it, and change the data rate. It’s all in the manual.

Window dub means a video with the time code super-imposed on it. It’s a lot of DVDs if you give the video to them as HD. If you do a low resolution hardware encode to MPEG-2 it’s not (but that assumes you have hardware for the job).

However you do it, I would say that the suggestion for a window dub is a good one. Putting Time Code on the video does 2 things, it helps the client (and you) to know what clips they want to use, and they don’t have the high quality video (so they can’t run away with it, leaving you behind). But going all the way back to VHS may be too primitive. A DVD with TC video would work anywhere.

The first thing you do (and this is the most important part), is do a search!
Googling bitrate calculator for DVD will turn up all kinds of answers.

The 4870 is an inexpensive upgrade for a much faster card. I went for it. As Michael said, it won’t help FCP (yet), but it will, and it does help other apps.

  • I just bought a 2nd copy of FCS2. I hadn’t opened the box. They said there is a 14 day return for full refund for unopened boxes. So, I just made the 14 day cut-off and they’ve given me a $500 refund, and I then bought FCS3 for $269.00 direct from Apple (using my Apple business discount). As for opened versions, not sure. They have done a 30 day discount for other software in the past though.
