Oh yeah, there’s that too 🙂 A part of my life that ended long (loooong) before the editing started.

I’ve been an editor for 12 years and run into the same thing all the time. The 2 things that help me the most are:
1- Showing the drafts to people *not* involved with the project. Hearing those other perspectives helps me rethink mine.
2- Output a tape or DVD and take it home, or somewhere outside the edit room. It’s amazed me how different an edit looks when viewing it from my couch.

April 7, 2005 at 2:09 pm in reply to: how to export a reference movie

The first thing to do is export it from FCP and compress it.

John Pale’s answer to this question a month or so ago: Export your sequence(s) as “Quicktime Movie” (not Quicktime Conversion). If you are preparing the DVD on the same computer, you can uncheck “Make Self Contained”. Drag the resulting file into Compressor, running as a standalone app (avoid using the FCP command “Export To Compressor”…many people have problems with it and it encodes MUCH slower that way).

Do a search on this forum or better yet, the DVD authoring forum, for the next steps. All the basic questions have been answered before.

Good one 🙂 Everyone rags on lawyers, but without them (and their language), we’d have much less entertainment.

Hmmmm, not trying to be rude Noah, but, says who? Although it’s ignorant (and sometimes rude) to post to the wrong forum, like here on the cow with the current Panasonic P2 stuff getting posted in the HDV forum, not everyone that may have an answer to (or an interest in) a question is on multiple boards (for example, I haven’t seen the question on the other lists I frequent). I just searched by author, selecting *all* forums, and it seems that the only place his question was asked *anywhere* on the Cow was in this forum. Maybe we should have a “Objection!” “Sustained, please rephrase the question counsel” approach. 🙂
And now, back to the proceedings.

    As I said above Bogie.
By definition, VCD is MPEG-1 (SVCD is MPEG-2).
    Ed

[bogiesan] “VCD or SVCD seems to be what they’re asking for. If you give them MPEG2 on a DVD and they try to play it on a VCD-capable, non-DVD-equipped PC, it ain’t gonna work.

Most of the VCDs I’ve done are MPEG1, lowest common denominator. “

I don’t use Compressor much. For high quality on Mac I use Bitvice. I use Procoder on PC. Search through the Compression forum for info on both of them, as well as bit-rate and settings info.

At the risk of making all this speculation about what they mean even more complicated, it’s possible that the reason they differentiate between dvds and “self-starting” mpeg2 cds is that they want VCDs or SVCDs, which use MPEG-2 compression on CDs instead of DVDs. They were developed in China, with government support and are very common in Asia. They play on lots of DVD players (in Asia), as well as CD players.

[David] “The delivered media request includes the following… see if it rings any bells…

    1 – beta sp ntsc
    1 – beta sp pal
    2 – dvd
    11 – self starting mpeg2 cd’s

Since he has specified dvd’s and cd’s seperate, is he implying that he needs video cd’s with mpeg2? If so, how would this be achieved? “

April 2, 2005 at 3:54 pm in reply to: Max out Hard Drive Space

You’ve sort of answered your own question. The G-RAIDs are designed to be filled all the way without lowering performance. The RAID reads/writes to and from the inner tracks of one drive and the outer of the other at the same time, so the performance stays consistent from empty to full.
    Ed

[Alexander] “Is there a general cut-off point when filling up hard drive space? I’m assuming if a hard drive is too full, then the performance will slow down or possibly lead to corruption. I purchased 2 400GB (actually 372GB) G-drives and 1 500GB (actually 465GB) G-raid which are designed to not slow down even when filling up. I think Larry Jordan mentioned only using 85% of hard drive space, but I’m going to need to squeeze as much space as I can as I have 100 plus hours of DV footage to work with. Any info most appreciated. “
