  • how to export from FCP 4.5 to flv file?

Posted by Kent Beeson on September 12, 2006 at 5:25 pm

    Hi

I need to make a 1:30 video from DV to fit on the web – in a previous video, I used H264 and got a good quality 1:25 down to 3.9mb…now If I were to export this new video out of FCP 4.5 using the FLV codec, can I get a video of even better quality than H264 at an even lower file size? If so, what settings would you recommend in the flv option box?

I ask because I’ve tried the flv at 700kb per second, On2 VP6, keyframe at automatic, high quality, size at 400 x 300 and the quality did not look as good as the H264 and it was 8.8mb! (was hoping it would be about 3 mb or less.)

    Thanks much

You’re not going to get an FLV file (even with the ON2VP6, in my humble opinion) to be as small and good looking as H.264. Have you considered WM9?
It sounds like if you’re using H.264 and thinking of ON2VP6 Flash then you’re not really concerned with reaching a big audience, which WM9 is good for,
but it’s also a very good format/codec with a small file size.

thanks for the reply – our audience is smallish but flv into a flash swf is what I’m talking about ultimately – either way, looks like H264 is best at the moment.

I understand your problem completely. we just under went the same isssues you are dealing with BUT we chose using the On2 VP6 codec strictly for compatibility reasons. Everybody has flash installed on their system, but not everybody has Quicktime, as I have found out.

File sizes depend wholely on your original timelines and settings. You said you were trying to compress to 700K but what screen size do you want? If you are looking at 320×240, you should be fine, as long as you video server can handle such a throughput. Issues such as yours usually is the fault of the server, not yours unless you have an older computer.

I would say that you need to try different transfer rates and check with your server to see what is the maximum capability for throughput.

I have been in the same issue my self and found the best result is to have a high kbps in the flv file but using a progressive download.

I found even old crummy machines could download the “high quality” default flv setting if it was set to progressive download in the flash project.

Thanks for all the helpful thoughts – so what are the steps…FCP 4.5 export my 1:30 timeline as an flv, Use On2 VP6, high quality, resize to 400 x 299, keyframe = automatic. Then what’s the best way to Import to Flash 8 Prof? What’s best way to export then? I just did an H264 mp4 version which looks very good but it’s 4.1 mb. Would love it to be under 3 mbs if a flv/swf.

    Thanks

    That’s for the FCP end.
The next step is to do the tutorial for importing video for progressive download. That’ll teach you what to do.

    Cheers
