    If someone you know has a Matrox MXO, I believe that does it too, in hardware.

    Now that they’re on Beta tapes they’re no longer HD, so the very best image you can get is 8bit uncompressed. Digitizing them to DVCProHD is not going to be the highest quality. And why do it to AVI? You’re working in FCP, right? Digitize it to QT.

    Do a search in this and the Compression Techniques forum. There have been discussions about the best way many times. The best way I’ve found with the tools I had was using Compressor and its Advanced Format Conversion (don’t use the deinterlace filter in it though!). It has a progressive output that looks as good as anything I’ve seen.

    Here’s the process as I’ve spelled it out before:

    Go into Compressor and in the Settings (Presets) select the Apple/Advanced Format Conversions/8-bit Uncompressed(either PAL OR NTSC).
    Select the Duplicate Selected Setting (one of the 3 buttons at the top left-it’s the right one). You can now edit the setting. Double click the setting
    to open the Inspector. Right under Description at the top of Inspector are 6 buttons, select Frame Controls. Select Custom as the Frame Controls
    (default is Off). Select Best for Resize Filter, Progressive as Output Fields, and Best as Deinterlace. Also select Best as Rate Conversion at bottom (not sure if that’s necessary, but what the hell). One of those 6 buttons at the top of the Inspector is Filters, and one option there is De-interlace,
    DON’T use that one, it’s crap, and you’ve already selected all the de-interlacing you need.

    I did the same thing someone else posting earlier did, I meant MBP, not FCP6. I’ll probably only get the MXO if I get a MBP.
    I’m still looking into a MBP/MXO combo with the possibility of a 2nd LCD for the MBP (I just need one more DVI out!). I’m waiting to hear if Matrox’s DVI splitter works with the MXO.

    I may look into that, not sure of the response rate of a TV versus monitor (it may be fine, haven’t looked yet). I didn’t mentionin my post that I want to be able to take the monitor to shoots (indoor shoots), so the smallest monitor to display a full 1280×720, the better.
    My workstation area *is* pretty crowded. I went from 19″ CRTs to a 24″ LCD, but adding another 24″ pushes it into the wall.

    Dell’s 24” is the only “monitor” I’ve seen with component in. I would just go with a second of those. If you’re so cramped for space that the difference between a 20″ and a 24″ display kicks you into claustrophobia, then it may be time to find a new work environment.”

    And I thought my earlier suggestion for you to read the manual (also known as RTFM) *would* help you. 🙂 Now I’m thinking you need more basic help than even that. The i in 1080i means interlaced. The p in 24p means progressive. It’s either one or the other, not both.
    I think what you need is a basic video book, some video 101 book.

    Of course, if you’re starting with a JVC HD-110, as your cross-post on the JVC forum says (cross-posting is a list no-no BTW), you’re starting with a 720 image, even if you still don’t believe me. 🙂 Somebody tell him! He’s saying he shot 1080i with an HD-110.

    I own an HD-110, it only shoots 720P and 480i, so you’ll have to be hypothetical with someone else. I think the best first step is to read your manual. Look at the section about Component Out at 1080i. You cannot record in 1080, only 720, but output to 1080 is something else.
