Good try, but you don’t need to use the titler. Import the Photoshop image into your project and put it on a track above your video track.
You will also find links to many free tutorials in the PremiereProPedia that will quickly show you how things are done in Premiere Pro.

Convert the audio files to WAV files that match your project settings and use the WAV files as your source clips.

If you don’t see anything then yes, you’re missing a lot. 😉
Premiere Pro supports all those formats, unfortunately only on the Windows platform.
Be aware that AVI is just a wrapper format that uses codecs to compress the contents.
On your Mac you will need to export to Quicktime format and then use something like QT Pro (?) to convert to one of the supported formats.
Do several small, test projects and see what works best for you.
