It looks a bit like a lomo — only not quite so dramatic.

    G’day

psd is definitely the way to go if you want a transparent background. if the background is transparent when you view it in photoshop, but has a black background in indesign — then your problem is almost certainly that the indesign frame itself has a black fill. set the fill to [none].

also — are you dragging from photoshop directly into indesign? i’ve never heard any good reason to do this. you should use file > place to import images as links in indesign — otherwise your file sizes will become horrendous.

    hope that helps.

    G’day

Different tools are used for different purposes. Photoshop is great for ‘photos’ and similar types of images — it is not great for graphic type images (for the reasons you have discovered).

Basically it comes down to the difference between pixel-based images and vector images. Vectors keep their crispness under virtually any circumstance — whereas pixel-based images are subject to the restraints of ‘resolution’.

For this type of image you could use Illustrator. But there’s also no really good reason not to build it directly in InDesign.

    G’day

25MB certainly sounds excessive for a one page PDF.
What export settings are you using and what is the final purpose of the PDF?
Play around with the ‘compression’ settings in your export preferences.

    G’day Luke

Open your pages panel (Windows > Pages).
Up the top you will see the page masters.
Double-click on the relevant master page and you should find the page numbers there.
Changes made to a master page get replicated to all pages with that master applied.
If you can’t select the page numbers — check your layers panel to ensure they’re not on a locked layer.

    Hope that helps

Yes, absolutely — this is totally normal. That’s how you get PDFs with such a small file size.

You can play around with image quality under the Compression tab in your export window. Experiment with both the Downsampling and Image Quality settings until you get the best balance between quality and file size for your requirements. Better quality = larger file.

With downsampling, as a rough guide, 72ppi = screen quality, 150ppi = inhouse print quality, 300ppi = press quality — try various numbers in between.

    G’day Jeff
This is caused by the invisible return character at the end of the paragraph having a different size/leading to the rest of the paragraph.
Either use paragraph styles to ensure the entire paragraph has the same specs, or go to your InDesign preferences > Type and check the box labelled “Apply Leading to Entire Paragraphs”

    G’day Jeff

Just select the reference in the Index panel and click go to selected marker at the bottom of the panel :

if you really want to use find/change you add the index marker symbol to your find ‘~|’ (that’s a tilde and vertical bar) :

hope that covers what you’re looking for.
    have a good one

Aah — gotcha — now it’s clearer (and, I’m happy to say, I got it wrong)

Do you have any reason for that first tab at .5? Because that’s where your problem is.
Your second screen grab shows it quite clearly — the page number for “payday” aligns perfectly with your indents for your subheads — both of which are set to .5.
