Regardless of whether or not the camera successfully worked before, if it is NOT mentioned on the list of approved devices by Apple, it may not always work the way it did before. Make sure you check the device list on Apple’s website. An unapproved device may work great 16 times but may fail 34 times.

Is the camera connected first to an external hard drive, which is in turn connected to the computer? Make sure the camera is connected directly to the computer’s internal hard drive, and that you are capturing video to the EXTERNAL DRIVE, not the computer’s internal drive. The application should always be on the internal hard drive and the captured files should always be assigned to the external hard drive. (It helps folks who are trying to assist you if you lead off your very first posting with ALL your pertinent information – type of computer, type of external hard drive, type of camera, version of editing software, etc., because there are a billion variables associated with troubleshooting these types of concerns.)

How is the camera connected? Is it routed directly to a hard drive? Are you using a hub, which can sometimes impede performance? Have you checked your camera on Apple’s website for device compatibility with your software? Can you at least capture through the DV-NTSC Converter setting without controlling the device through Final Cut?

Not sure if this helps, but any iMovie file imported into Final Cut comes in as a “DV” file, and must be rendered before you can utilize it.

“A window pops up and says it can’t recognize it.”

    “It” can’t recognize what?

“So I prceeded to re set the FCExp to every and all the other settings and they don’t work either.”

Don’t work for what? What were you trying to do by trying different settings?

Not trying to be difficult, but there are a billion “its” and a ton of “whats” involved in configuring software and hardware. Be a bit more specific when describing your dilemma and then folks can more easily help you.

If “it” is camera compatibility with FCE, then try first going to Apple’s website for the listing:

    Good luck.

December 10, 2007 at 3:27 am in reply to: HELP HELP HELLP Copy/Moving files

Every time you move any type of media file out of its original file path, that movement is registered in the bin and timeline with the red slash.

For example, if you move a Quicktime Movie File named “Cutaways” out of the following file path:

    PowerBook G4 > External Drive 500gb > Project Folder > Project A >
    Capture Scratch Folder > “Cutaways”

…..you must reconnect that file through its new path, in this case, to the newly chosen/different external hard drive.

Not until you reconnect any and all media files that have been moved from the original path to their new path(s) will the red slashes be removed.

    Use the “Reconnect Media” procedure.

November 21, 2007 at 1:27 am in reply to: Timecode not captured

Like a bad dream or a cloud of fog, I’ve just reviewed several of the over 40 projects done in the last year and found that none of the clips captured ever retained the timecode from the DV tape, and this is confirmed in the Brenneis book. I have no idea why this reality has chosen now to baffle me.

The task remains, though, to edit portions of a 60-minute tape with the number of logged clips too numerous for start-and-stop capture. Because tape timecode began at 00:00:00:00, my only guess is to capture the entire tape from start/00, which should closely match the 00-start timecode FCE will assign to the 60-minute clip once capture is complete. Again, I have NO idea why this feature is just dawning on me after 12 months of working with FCE, and I apologize for wasting the time of generous readers.

Just tried a different tape that was recorded one year ago with the same result.

Also tried a different firewire cable with same result.

And just tried different tapes in a Panasonic AG-DVC60 for playback with the same result.

So the same result – timecode starting from 00:00 using Capture/Now with different tapes, cables and cameras. The timecode is read correctly when just playing the tape through FCE, but once capture begins, every clip captured begins with 00:00 timecode.

Your camera may be in “VCR mode,” but what setting have you chosen in F.C. for your capture?

Are you using a Firewire setting which allows control of the camera through your computer?

Try the “DV-NTSC DV Converter” setting in Easy Setup. You will have to control the camera manually, not automatically through the computer, but this may help you deal with this issue.

October 9, 2007 at 1:19 pm in reply to: What are these AV1, AV2 files?

Don’t have a whole lot to suggest. Just that I have occasional, similar concern after some, but not all, of my captures. I usually get the same types of files when I am having a problem capturing, such as the one I believe I described a few months ago, when my capture video was freezing every 35-40 seconds. Whenever this happened and I had to cut short the capture of a particular clip because it froze, I would later find those types of files in the capture folder. One file seemed to be the “actual” video file, while the companion “numbered” file seemed to be some kind of a reference file. And I learned real quick that one can’t “live” without the other, after I trashed the reference files and then learned the remaining video file wouldn’t play without them. Sorry couldn’t be more help.
