  • FCE lists Windows Media as one of many conversion options, but you CAN’T do it unless you have a third party conversion software, like Flip4Mac (flip4mac.com). If you don’t already own the free version, you will have to buy the WMV Studio version for $49. Follow the instructions carefully. It’s not like buying a typical download/install software file. There are several steps and a potential 20-30 minute waiting period before you can use it after download. (See Tom Wolsky for more details.) Good luck.

  • I think I actually helped myself at the outset of my
    project without knowing it.

Due to 20 years of editing TV news and my somewhat
anal nature, I have been trying to maintain the same
types of settings in my non-linear work as I did in
    my linear experience.

During capture, I fed Betacam Channel One
soundbites into the left channel of my mini DV
camera on its way to my PowerBook. I also
directed all natsound material recorded on
Betacam Channel Two into the right channel.
And when recording narration straight into
my camera, I kept it on Channel One only.
The results appeared to have made my cleanup
work much easier. There were only a few bites
that I had to turn mono and pan all the way right.
All of the natsound I laid was already on the right
    channel.

Thanks again for your help. The manuals and
books provide decent, basic explanation, and
the essence of NLE seems to be tailor-made
for news applications. But your ability to
spell things out clearly and in a step-by-step
manner help complete the education process.

    Have a great holiday.

  • thanks tom. just got re-setup and ready to try.
i was actually toying with the types of things
you mentioned earlier today, with limited success.
but they are refreshed in my mind now that
you have mentioned them. if i succeed, i may
be sending you an early christmas present.

    Thanks, Tom!

And thanks also to David and Todd.

I capitalize my subject titiles so old men like me with
bad eyes can read them more easily.

I am a bit confused, though, that Tom’s was the only
reply that followed-up with a correct reference to Express,
not Pro. As I said in my query, I am running FCE.

Another concern I have is that I am running FCE and
LiveType on both a G5, where I couldn’t import, and
a G4/laptop, where I could import. The concern is
the fact that the G5 was acquired from a previous
owner and has about 10 partitions to the hard disk.
I am slowly learning where the boot drive is located,
where the O.S. is located, but am still mostly confused
about what this all means, and even more disappointed
that I can’t seem to reduce the number of partitions
through the few inexperienced attempts I’ve made.
Add to that the fact that I was forced to reinstall
Mac O.S. X in order to create a new user name and
password since the prior user’s name and password
prevented me from installing any software, and you
    have one thoroughly confused editor!

I will attempt all suggestions and bid you all a great
    week.

  • Glad to see I’m not the only one up late (CST)!

First, I upgraded the free version, tried to convert,
no luck, just first 30 seconds. (I also tried to convert
other projects to make sure it wasn’t a problem with
the first project only, and had the same results.)

Then I purchased Player Pro, got serial number which
automatically updated in the System Preferences
    window for FLip4Mac.

After that, tried to locate Player Pro, but I guess it
doesn’t download with the serial number after purchase?

And everytime I go to Flip4Mac site, the only downloads
I can find are the free ones like the one I first had.
I guess since I did a search of my drive and couldn’t
find any application that specifically said “Player Pro,”
that means I must still download after paying, but
    how?

thanks so much for your quick response, shane!

no, i did NOT have an external monitor hooked up,
because i’ve been able to see and hear previous
analog inputs in the flip-out LCD panel on my camera.

however, i also did NOT utilize any of the other six
steps you mentioned, either, so i believe therein
    lies the problem.

    will test tomorrow.

    thanks again.
