(F.C.E. 3.0 HD, PowerBook G4, MiniDV & Beta SP sources)

My Sony PVM-1343MD NTSC monitor works great. I hook it up through one of my MiniDV cameras. Got it for less than $300 on eBay.

Shane, sorry to break into someone else’s post, had a few relevant questions:
i am going both ways between a Beta SP deck and a G4 PowerBook with FCE HD 3.0.
    between the two i may use a Panasonic AG-DVC60, a Canon XL2, or a DataVideo DAC-15.
what are some of the pros and cons of each of these three converters, as they relate
to compression, etc. i’m not very knowledgeable about the conversion process.
i just use these three converters, they seem to work, the end product seems to look
and sound okay, and i move on. thanks.

  • this probably won’t help, but i occasionally get dropped frames on playback with FCE HD 3.0 and my PowerBook G4.

all i do is save the project, close the project, close FCE, restart the G4, open everything up, and it’s fine.

    sorry i couldn’t help.

(i am also running FCE HD on a dual-motorola G5, and have never had the dropped frame concern.)

I solved the same problem a few weeks ago, thanks to a previous post. Go to Apple’s website and – for $20 – download Quicktime Mpeg2. Then download the free Mpeg Streamclip Converter from a different website (I forgot which one – you should be able to Google the site name.) Together, these two pieces will allow you to import the file folder named Video_TS, which you can locate by simply double-clicking on the DVD icon of the DVD you want to dub from. Once this folder is imported into the Mpeg Streamclip Converter, you can convert the files into several different formats that can then be imported into Final Cut. Good luck.

Try “DV-NTSC DV Converter” under Easy Setup. That’s what “converter” means – it converts any analog format (U-matic, Beta, Hi-8, etc.) into digital format en route to FCE. This is the ONLY choice for any incoming analog video.

For $80 on eBay I purchased a set of Roland Micro Monitor MA-8 speakers. For the money, they are WONDERFUL for NLE use. By plugging the mini-plug end into the earphone mini-jack on most cameras, you get great sound for an affordable price. I use the Panasonic AG-DVC60 and the Canon XL2 as analog/digital converters for all of my Beta SP material going in and out of my PowerBook G4 & PowerMac G5. Both of them have earphone mini-jacks. With the XL2, you control the volume with its own dial and/or the dial on the MA-8s. Good luck.

No idea what “tagging spots” means. But I can tell you how I have routed my Sony U-matic/3-quarter inch deck and a Sony UVW-1800 Beta SP deck to my PowerBook G4 and PowerMac G5: I have used both the Panasonic AG-DVC60 MiniDV camera and the Canon XL2 MiniDV camera as analog/digital converters. No problems with either setup. The XL2 even has a BNC connection port for video, in addition to the RCA port.
Not many folks realize that many of these types of MiniDV cameras are also 2-way, analog/digital converters. In fact, I use both of mine more for converting and less for shooting!
