Yep, been using FCPX for years on my iMac – whose display died during Summer. So the only replacement I could afford was Mac Mini. Can’t afford FCPX so I’m forced to use iMovie.

    Thanks for quick response.

First, a correction: the large raw clip was the 16-minute file, not the full, 40 minute file.

Still, iMovie wouldn’t allow the entire 40 minutes of raw to be imported (yes, plenty of room on the external drive).

Since I only needed a few clips from the entire raw, I just found each in- and out-time & imported them separately with no issues.

I can edit with Quicktime? Split clips, adjust audio levels?

    Thanks for quick response.

I restarted everything several times; no luck.

But when I merely exported as self-contained, it worked the first time.

Frankly, I’m just thrilled everything else worked up to that point.

    Have a good weekend.

It just exported as a QT self-contained movie but I wanted to use the custom settings export.

    Thanks for quick response.
In the time since posting, I discovered that the 8 Sony Handycams we rarely use (because they lack an external mic jack and we lack enough micro SD cards) are LANC-capable through the Multi jack with the Sony RM-VPR remote zoom. So instead of wasting $2,400 on the cheapest, LANC-capable Canon Vixias, I’ll be buying three Sony remotes and saving cash that can be redirected to other equipment.
I like the idea of using the dollies to dolly in/out for frame adjustment, but our tiny studio wouldn’t even allow the necessary space for those moves. (In fact, it’s almost silly to even have the tripods on dollies.)

March 24, 2015 at 10:07 pm in reply to: Memory eating drive space

The partitions arrived with the PowerMac. I assume the original owner didn’t like the costs back then (2005?) for external hard drives, so he chose to partition-the-heck out of it to avoid O.S./application/media conflicts and poor performance.

I’ve always been leery of attempting to merge some or all of them because I don’t know how, don’t know if I can do it merely with Disk Utility, and I am afraid to mess with at least one of the three partitions which serve as start-up disks for the computer. Though I have been researching today about how to do it. Plus I think I have room to add memory modules.

    First, thanks for quick response!

All of my media is stored on external drives – Firewire
and USB – so the internal, PowerMac partitions are NOT
being cluttered with captured video files.

I have had issues in the past with trying to “transfer”
the Final Cut Express app to other partitions.
Sometimes it still lacks other components, I think,
to function fully like it did on the original partition
that also serves as the boot drive.

Is there just no way to locate and delete
    that RAM “stuff?”

I’ll use whatever media is compatible and correct. But first I need the recorder. So I’m seeking knowledge on an HD and/or BlueRay recorder that’s compatible with my hardware, software and HDV 1080i/Quicktime video files. Once I get the recorder, then I’ll worry about the media.

I am still on F.C.E. 3.5.1 but don’t remember ever trying to do what you are attempting.

January 14, 2015 at 7:08 pm in reply to: CLIENT CAN’T PLAY QT/HD on PC

Yes, I’ve really stretched-out all the value and more from an investment in used hardware nine years ago! Not terribly amazing, though, when you understand that the vast majority of my clients are thrilled with near-cuts only end products and don’t require motion graphics/video effects for their needs. Most of my corporate work is for video news releases or products which are similarly low on effects. And I may take you up on your conversion offer some day. Thanks.
