I’ve begun looking at CatDV today, and really like the look of the networked workgroup option.

For the last several years (and, like you, nearly 100 external drives), I’ve been using CDFinder. It’s been great for cataloging every drive and making things searchable by name, type, size, path, etc. I use it every single day.

However, I now have need for much more metadata for advanced searches that aren’t file system related. And I need to provide a way for others to search for clips based on broader terms.

    So, here we go!

My mistake… I was thinking along the lines of a complete QuickTime uninstall, not just the player app. I’ve set QT Player 7 as the default handler precisely because of it’s versatility, so I never see QT X.

I suspect CS5 will work with either version, but probably opts for the system default (QT X).

QT X cannot (*should not*) be removed. QT 7 is offered as an additional install, and the different versions will co-exist peacefully.

If you’ve got a standalone QT 7 Pro serial number, the pro features do come back (for QT 7). Apple still sells Pro keys for $30 – well worth the money, IMO.

All of my machines have been upgraded to Snow Leopard, and all of them have QT X and QT 7 Pro. Two of those machines run FCS3, and two of them run FCP X. No QT related issues that I’ve seen.

They say that composition is as much about what isn’t there…

    Yeah, I’ll go with that.

  • Can’t check at the moment, but I’ve noticed that having other apps running does affect performance.

For instance, last night (with this forum open in Safari), I was experiencing similar behavior. Also noticed lots of beachball when TimeMachine kicked in.

Big improvement after I quit everything else.

Similarly situated. Need to use NAS, FCP X can’t see it.

November 16, 2010 at 4:11 pm in reply to: DVCProHD Components for QuickTime

I understand what you’re saying Jerry, and generally speaking, I agree completely.

The fly in the ointment is that QuickTime and Keynote would both play the same compressed files flawlessly – either from internal or external disk. Believe me when I say to you that I have tested this extensively using different codecs / encoders / settings. I just didn’t expect an outdated QuickTime component to jack up only ONE application, ya know?

So, which DVCProHD components do You have installed? Just curious, you see…
