You’re welcome Michael. But again, if sound monitoring is your only need the Behringer is 40 bucks. If a more powerful mixer is needed, Behringer makes 12-24 input mixers for under 350 dollars and they work really well. I am also a musician and they time and again pass the test…no need to spend Mackie money. As far as digital mixing goes, don’t worry about it. The only issue will be getting anlog audio into the Kona which is a bit of a pain.

The Firewire 410 is for things like Garage Band, Cubase, Pro Tools etc. Unless you mis-informed them, I’d talk to Sean who owns the Burbank store and state your case. Mention me if you want as I do a lot of business with him and my office is a block away. I’ve have him waive the fee for valid claims…. but no guarantees. Mention it’s an “exchange” as I think they carry the Behringer. The FW410 is nice though if you’ll ever do audio.
If there’s anything else I can do to help without more ridicule email me and I’ll send you my cell#. Bob can help you as well but I figure you want to come out in one piece. I use the Io and Kona for a lot of different things and have it pretty figured out.

Melrose Mac, then I apologize. I buy from them often……worlds away fom Mac Mall. The Kona really wants a digital audio board. I bought the Behringer 3216, sorta a Yamaha 02 rip off. The Behringer little board that is a good audio monitor device is the UB802 and Guitar Center sells it for 39.95. I got it because my control room knob is too far to reach as the digital mixer is big. Be aware that the levels coming out of the analog phono jacks are not going to match the AES coming out of the Kona so do calibrate to the deck before commiting to the final master mix level.

Good grief. How can someone get a rockin’ Kona 3 and not have a clue how to use it? Sorry to be rude but Bob is accurate, the Mac Mall people barely know computers. Get a simple Behringer 4 in mixer for 50 bucks at Guitar Center and problem solved.

ATTO UL5D in my Mac Pro with Kona 3 crashes over 2 gig of ram. Sometimes it took an hour or so but it does. Reverted back to 2gig. Atto says they’re in testing on a new driver and will post on their confusing site.

I use the Panasonic PN-BT-LH1700W and 2 Dell 2405s as Bob and a few of the guys bagged on the Dell for accuracy, though I think it looks great. The Panny also comes in a beautiful 26″ version that costs more that the car I just bought my kid. They both have accurate waveforms which I find I use often, no vectroscope. Panny explained that the omission of it is because color is subjective in it’s legality so we downconvert to SD to check it there as we have found the only people who flag color are those viewing with analog scopes (AHHHHHH).
My question is what massive storage solution are you using? I’ve built several 2.5 TB raids (For under 1500 bucks) that are sitting idle until the proper drivers from CalDigit are released in the next week or so and I’m hurting with DVCProHD with ONLY 3.5 TB of SATA internal and SCSI drives.
But again, Bob and the gang advised me to get the Kona 3 and it is so rockin’. Upconverts, cross converts and down converts and with the Katrina doc I’m doing with all kinds of sources, it is a blessing, though I use my Io for analog to SDI.Good luck and keep up up-to-date on your progress and successes.

AJA recommends the component output of the K3 to monitor instead of converting to DVI or HDMI and I agree, on my Dell 2405 (the predesessor to the 2407) it looks great.

Melrose (Burbank) Mac will do ya better and not give you shaky info that, unfortunately, I’ve experienced too often from the above mentioned vendor. The store I use is in Burbank CA. Manny or Sean (the owner). If you mention it, you can fill out a form and only pay 3% sales tax (the CA production incentive measure) if you state you’re in post production.
I love my Mac Pro/ Kona 3 setup. Had some growing pains in the beginning and I’m still waiting on the SATA card updates, but now all’s well and AJA is the best by far at tech support, The 2 gig ram limit is days away from AJA and it will work well…..now Pro Tools on my other Mac Pro is another story.

Mine broke this past week in Katrina territory and we were down for a day until we could make temporary repairs. It is a flimsy connector at best and the metal used to construct it is too soft to handle the constant use. I am a fan of the camera but the simple little things are very annoying. We also had the handle break with the Firestore and a focus monitor attached to it. After taking it apart. we found the metal to be way too thin to handle the torque and the screws on the front part of the handle too shallow to do the job. Beware!
