Thanks Jeremy. Which Nattress plug in are you referring to? I may have it. I’ve tried several of his and noting yet. I like him and supporting him so I’d like to buy that one anyway. I’ll give compressor a spin….never really gotten in to it yer but will. And thanks again.

Jeremy,
Glad you replied. You may have an idea here……..
I got myself into a setup I’m not happy with but have to deal with it. Shot everything 720p24DVCProHD, sequence settings at 720p24 but I have a ton of hurricane footage on home video formats DVD, DV etc and I’m still not real happy with the results of getting it into the project. I use the Kona 3 with Mac Pro, SCSI, SATA raids etc. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

I have a mixture of CalDigit and Huge drives and they both are great. I’ve never had a single issue with either and both capture uncompressed (well that’s not true, all HD is compressed) HDCam and D5 flawlessly. I like the CalDigit guys as do I the Huge guys. I gave CalDigit a shot as I met them at NAB and they’re a small company with a great desire to help and they were the first to get me MacIntel drivers. Atto on the other hand……..and their attitude……!! I think Apple needs to get with it in terms of optimizing for P2 material and the real time playback thing they claim is just not real. But I also have a Nitrus Symphony in the stable and it’s not much better though more powerful and boots up fast unlike the FCP big projects which can take 5-10 minutes.
Any other questions don’t hesitate.

Jeremy,
My 2 cents worth here… Worked with the AJA code writers before the Mac Pro drivers were released and they found that the Kona in slot 3 and configured as 4 lane works best. I use setting #4 in the Expansion Utility as I have a CalDigit SATA card in Slot 4, Kona 3 in 3, Atto UL5D in 2 and all is well. I’ve seen no degridation in quality running the graphics card in a 8/16 lane setting and I’m pumping into two Dell 2405’s with the standard card. I am in the midst of a feature shot on DVCProHD 720/24 and a bunch of uprezed footage so I’m not really pushing the big bytes through but have done tests with HDCam and no issues there, but only a test. I’ve got a Mac Pro 3 gig and a 2.66 and both are solid though I’ve experienced some lock-up issues importing P2 footage with more than 2 gigs of ram. Working with Atto and AJA to try and figure that one out. With the ram on the slides it’s really no big deal to pull out a few gigs and reset. I need to do further testing and narrow down the circumstances but haven’t had the time yet.
Hope this helps.

Hey Shane,
Please let me know how you end up attacking this and the quality of the results. I have a Mac Pro and Kona 3 and the picture looks great but the frame rate issue is still a bit of an issue. I’ve had the best results with the Kona and Nattress Format converter though it still isn’t “great”. Must admit that I’ve solved a lot of it with projection and reshooting in HD and it’s a great artist look as well.

And Mitch, just talked with Focus Thursday and they expect to have the native recording software as well as QuikTime recording by mid-November.

I hope so. Been watching things at Spec Com for a while. A great guy running the company. I’ve just been hoping and having to put my excitment on hold while component deliveries keep pushing it back. Sure needed it as the Firestore caused us a lot of grief that we’re still trying to cut around, but it works well now. Learned that until I have it in a Pelican case heading to location it’s vapor to me. Sorry for any confusion. Still pulling for them too hit a home run with it.

I needed two new computers quick, jumped in as Walter said with the attitude to make it all work and it does, and better than ever. There are issues to work around, but 30 years at this and there’s ALWAYS things to work around, always! The Mac Pros are much more refined than the G5 duals were in the early days and the software is just starting to trickle in. Plus, you gotta believe in the 18 month rule with technology, maybe even less for editorial.
Best of luck!

All’s well there Shane. Thing seems to be maturing just fine and with the Cineporter looking more and more like vapor, thank god! Just put it throught the paces over the weekend and was very happy.

Jeremy,
I could not really understand the chart. I have 2 1 gig sticks in riser 1 and 4 512 sticks in riser two. Melrose Mac said they’d exchange the 4 512s for 2 1 gigers if I need to. What do you think?
