OK OK, I get the UV filter. We had a matte box on the camera with a clear filter to protect it. TSA took the camera out of the case to “inspect” it and knocked the matte box off and scratched the outer element in doing so.

Hope dinner was good…..one of my favorite things!
Have a Sigma series 2000. Was stupid to say it did multi-frame rates. Meant to say it does 30fps and 29.97, was once used for a telecine bay long since pillaged. Seems to do the trick. Noticed it will start to crud up but corrects itself. Thanks B for the tip….just made too much sense.

You rock! Will change to ref in. Rudy advised to run on freerun. I have a multi-frame rate NTSC ref generator which works well for typical SD stuff. I don’t have tri-level but since the Horita you mention isn’t, I assume it will work for DVCProHD since the audio is simple 48k stuff. Let me know if any of this supposition is wrong.

Gotta say I’m happy that all you guys are having success with the CalDigit boxes. I had to make a decision just after the MPs came out and the CalDigit guys made me feel they were on top of it so I bought them waiting for the drivers and have been very happy. I got some resistance in the early going from some of the more skeptical Cowers but feel a sense of relief I didn’t steer anyone wrong. I’m about to pony up for another box. Besides, they look cool too.

Tim, I jumped to the Intel Mac Pros and had a helluva time in the beginning but am very pleased now. Only issue has been fiber channel cards which I don’t use anymore. Feel free to ask for specifics if necessary. Just finshing a feature with the Kona 3/Mac Pro setup and with knowledge of any potential weirdness can finally say that I have a FCP system that rocks!

Well, the Kona 3 will work on PCIe G5’s like the last generation Quads etc. The Kona 3 offers up/cross/down converting of SD/HD signals and sounds to me like you’ll be needing that handy feature until you’ve dumped the SD stuff.

Well, the Kona is RGB out for monitoring and SDI out for everything else. There is a way to get composite out of it but why? The HD/SD RGB coming out of the BOB is fantastic for monitoring to a compatible monitor or Plasma/LCD etc. If your devices (the switcher?) will not accept either RGB or SDI then it’s obvious you’ll need converters to do so and they can tally up the costs really fast. There are component switchers (for feeding monitors etc) that won’t break the bank. Now, what about audio? It’s ONLY AES in/out except for the phono conectors on the BOB for monitoring only though I recommend listening to the AES so you absolutely know what your are sending for delivery.

Call the AKA tech support guys. They tell the truth and will help. If you’re trying to accuse the AJA people of false advertising I don’t think you’ll find any takers here. They’ve saved many a project for me and a few others here.

Who sells this stuff and offers no insight to the final use? This is a diaster waiting to happen with perfectly good gear. As Bob stated, you HAVE to get something to convert analog component (Out of the DSR) to SDI for input. I use my good ol’ trusty Io but you need something cheaper and it’s out there. Search for component to SDI converter and you’ll find several. Print out the operators manual included in the driver package and it will help you understand some of this stuff. Trust us, it works great but you really didn’t buy a transition system, you bought an HD Porsche and now must learn to drive stick.

Agree with the display thing. I feed a 42″ plasma with DCVProHD 720 and it rocks. Component out of the Kona is just fine, an AJA or Blackmagic SDi to HDMI converter looks good as well but rescales the pic so has it’s issues as well. Point is I’d go the 108Oi Kona DVCProHD codec and use the power of the Kona for playback, picture lovin’ and the like. What is the medium of playback in the Kiosk etc in the end? I’ve also got the same camera package and just projected a feature in fill size theater and it made me proud. Email me off list and I can go in to detail about the P2 to FCP thing in detail.
