You’re obviously very familiar with your system so I won’t bore you with the obvious things to check when making sure you’re hooked up properly. Have you tried trashing the Final Cut Pro preference files yet and then restarting FCP?

When’s the last time you performed system maintenance on your startup and media drives? If it’s been a while then that should be your first course of action. This involves cleaning system log and cache files, rebuilding hard drive directories with stellar programs like DiskWarrior, repairing disk permissions with Apple’s Disk Utility, etc. You might try downloading the first installment of Creative Cow’s online magazine and read the article by Jerry Hofmann entitled: “Achieving A Rock Solid Final Cut Pro System.”

Sure. Highlight one of your .pdf docs’ file icon, choose “get info” and in the dialogue box that pops up there’ll be an area where you can set the default program that opens all your .pdf docs. About halfway down look for “open with”. Choose “Preview App.”from the pop up menu and then click the box below that that says “change all”. Done.

If I had to choose between the XL1 and the XL2 I’d choose the XL2. You can’t find a new XL1 anyway, which means you’d have to buy a used one, which means……don’t. The XL2 is light years ahead of the XL2 in terms of picture quality and shooting options.
XL2 drawbacks: front heavy and large.
Direct competition is the Panasonic DVX 100B.
100B drawbacks: 12X zoom and no native widescreen. But it is lighter, smaller and less expensive than the XL2.
The type of shooting you plan to do is the most important factor in a camera purchace. Once you know that then the camera choice is pretty much decided for you. For example: if the majority of your shooting is run and gun using available light (as in low light) I wouldn’t consider either of the above cameras, but would instead go with the Sony PD170.

Keep us in the loop, John. I’d be real interested to know what the problems turns out to be. I find it curious that a bad video card won’t let you boot from a CD 🙂

This happens all the time to me before the effect is rendered, but not after. Just a reminder to make sure that what you’re viewing really IS rendered. If you’re seeing the problem after rendering then I’m not sure what it might be. If this has just started happening lately, try running FCP Recue and do the “trashing preferences” thing.

My new MacPro 3.0 is still sitting in the box (finishing up projects on the G5 first). I had Apple put 8 Gigs of RAM in it when they built it. Let’s hope they got it right 🙂
