You might have to export a sequence of stills and create a track matte in Photoshop or your image editing package of choice. Tedious, yes, but without AE, it may be your only hope.

You may also be experiencing slow-down in your on-screen display because when the firewire device is on, Premiere Pro may be outputting through Firewire. It lets the on-screen display refresh slow down to keep full speed motion going out over the firewire.

Actually, though, that German site is advertising “Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0e.” I take the “e” to mean Elements, which has already come out. I think this particularly likely given that the price shown is 68.14 Euros — about 80 bucks….

After Effects 7 has been announced a couple places, so I’m sure the PremierePro (and the rest of the video collection) can’t be far away. I’m getting excited!

Or if it’s not terribly long or if it is terribly important, you could move into AfterEffects and use the cloning tool. Tedious very likely, but it could do the trick.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you could come close to this effect using Particle Illusion with the take color from underlying layer feature.
I really need to upgrade to PI 3 so I can try these things out!

One more thought to the mix….
I often find the AE tutorials that say “then apply Tinderbox filter such-and-such” to be similarly frustrating. While I’m sure those extra plug-ins are awesome (I have a few plugs that I use all the time), it’s a little disappointing to be reading a tutorial that requires them.
That said, I still read the tutorial and see if I can figure a way to do the same thing without the extra plugs.
You can often do everything you might do in Photoshop within AE, but sometimes it’s just so much faster to do it in Photoshop. Same thing is true of these external plugs.
I agree with the above posts that learning Photoshop would be a great boon to you as a motion graphic person, but you absolutely don’t have to. It just makes life a lot easier.
By the way: yours was a well written post that brought up something without raising ire of the folks who love Photoshop.

It looks very good. The modeling and is excellent, the color choices are very good. My only complaint would be about the brief accellerated motion moments — right at the beginning and again during one of the crane-bys of the statue; it felt awkward. The swooping text that orbits and moves behind the statue is really nice, and I like your use of sinedots in the background. All in all a very polished piece. I’d love to see it with music, as well.
For less than 2 years experience, I’d say this is awesome. It could easily play on TV.
