The Kona 3 is the more professional of cards, I almost bought a Decklink until I read a little more and found that their audio inputs were sub pro. I bought a Kona card several months after using the AJA IO and wished that I had gotten the Kona card from the gitgo. Since then I’ve bought another and am so glad that I did. The KONA 3 will give you UP/Down conversion and accelerates DVCPRO HD among RT Extreme. You won’t be upset getting the Kona 3.

They will probably offer a $100,000 system for $10,000 to draw some of the higher end Avid guys.

I would hope that it will support mixed formats in the timelines.

  • I almost bought one but the lack of Professional Audio inputs deferred me to AJA. It might work for you but I’ve heard that AJA is a step above Decklink.

I tend to lean more towards Sony when it comes to broadcast quality, but I’ve got to say that DVCpro HD has the upper hand for Workflow and keeping things in their native form in HD right now. I personally would like to see Sony come out with a 100mb/s MPeg2 4:2:2 Full Raster HD codec that can tranfer over IP like Sony IMX. But for now if you want to stay away from Uncompressed DVCProHD is where it’s at.

If the XDCAM is HD and DVCPro 50, and your output is only going to be Beta SP you should only need to keep everything in the DV realm or else you will need to upconvert your DV50 footage to match your XDcam footage. FCP likes everything in the same codec, as of yet it doesn’t support mixed timelines. However with RT Extreme turned on you can get by with mixing DV and DV50 in the Same timeline.
I would use the DVcam codec in the XDCamcorders if they are HD Xdcam (IMX50 if it’s SD) and keep it in the same ball park.

One of the greatest things to come to FCP is Multiclip, Love it and edit sequences of more than 2 1/2 hours. Give it some time you’ll figure it out.
