What relationship do you have with the online facility? Do you have a choice?
Their advice to upgrade, honestly, is really bad advice. It *may* be cheaper if everything works perfectly, but if your project implodes because of the upgrade, was it worth the potential savings?
It’s far better to do it the way Jeremy, Dave & Walter suggest than to nuke your perfectly fine 4.5 system to upgrade to 5.1.
Any major upgrades in the middle of a project is just courting disaster. I’d ask them tougher questions about why they think it’s so important for you to bring them a 5.1 project. Get to the bottom of it before you bring them your project. They may not really be the right facility for you.

Isn’t Error Code 34 “Disk Full”…or is it -34?
How full is the disk? At least 10% free?
For the record, I keep my Capture Scratch on the main level of the media drive. It’s just easier for my brain. I know it’s what many others do, as well, but I don’t know if it is “preferred” or not.

I’d take it back, but I’m more angst-ridden than most when it comes to such things.
But yes, you should always reformat drives when you take them out of the box, even if it says it’s already Mac formatted.

White means you have a match frame edit with no adjustments. Red means you have a match frame edit with adjustments to one or the other side.
It likely means you may have changed the volume level on one of the clips.
The actual hash marks mean you have an edit in your clip, but you didn’t remove or add any frames, so the timecode is continuous in the clip.

Well, if you didn’t shoot it, you don’t know that the camera’s clock WASN’T set. It’s possible FCP is teeling you the truth. It can’t do it becuase there is no data or not the right data available for the function to do what it does.
It might be time to log instead.

If you are capturing via firewire, you are actually ingesting a data stream, so there are no video or audio levels to speak of. You’ll need to do your adjustments after the fact, or capture through an I/O card that allows for level adjustments.

I think you should request the presence of the cinematographer while you do this, so he can see just how “easy” it is to deal with his decision in post.
He may sing a different tune after he sees how many freakin’ hoops you have to go through because he decided to not push a button.
