If it were me, I’d try to compile my image sequence in QT Pro first and export it with the codec I need for my project.
Extra bounus there….no rendering in FCP.

You can batch capture from either place, it sort of depends on how you structured your original project.
I tend to start with what’s in the bin, but that’s because I log and capture, and my organization is pretty good. I like to keep an eye on the list….which you don’t get when you batch capture from the timeline.

Sometimes Out of Memory errors are referring to virtual memory, which really means that your hard drives are getting too full.
How full are ALL drives connected to the computer? The general rule is that no drive should be over 90% full, and many strongly suggest you keep up to 20% free when working with large video files.

[walter biscardi] “but too much work on the plate right now.”
Ha ha ha ha ha ha!!
Walter made a food-related joke!

Open the Image Sequence in QuickTime Pro and use the Export function to get a QT movie with the settings you need for your project. Less render time in FCP that way.

Sorry, reel. There was no emotion in it for me.
I was merely offering a counterpoint.

Have you cleaned the heads on either deck recently? Dirty heads can be the cause of many “malfunctions”.
For the record, my DSR-45 has been working flawlessly for three years. I’m not doubting reel2reel’s experience, but rather just letting you know that it’s not a common complaint. Most DSR-45 users I know swear by ’em.

If the source is the same, and it happens on some clips but not others in the same sequence, and you have confirmed that all the clip settings are the same, then something happened during editing. Perhaps you were in image+wireframe mode and accidentally moved the frame in the canvas. Not enough to really notice, but even a fraction is enough.
Try the Remove Attributes trick. I’d guess the render bar will go away once you remove attributes for Basic Motion.

JW may have the best solution.
If the original captures were not solid, then there’s little you can do to make the files work. What’s probably happening is that you are losing cohesion at the very end of the clip where you lose signal. This makes the total length of the clip erroneous. He should have captured to avoid hitting any piece of tape that had no signal. That’s NLE 101.
Do your best. And there is always a chance someone who’s gone through something similar may have a Hail Mary for you…I hope there is…
…but if not, I second JW’s advice.

Also, the wmv export is not free in QuickTime. If you’re only getting 20 seconds or so, that means you’re using the demo.
You need to buy either the Flip4Mac plugin, or Popwire’s WM9 Component. Popwire is less expensive. Flip4Mac gives you more control. Head to head tests on the defaults for each show no discernable difference, but if you’re the type that likes/needs to futz, Flip4Mac is probably for you. If you just need wmvs for approvals and such, then you could save yourself some money and go with Popwire.
Google each.
