RE: Locating Timecode Break…!!!
Posted by Jaythan on August 3, 2006 at 12:13 amI have been attempting to capture 45 minutes of footage from a DV tape. Everytime I try, I keep getting a message “LOCATING TIMECODE BREAK” I’ve turned off ‘abort’ and ‘warn’ of timecode breaks, but it contin ues to do it. A if I let it keep caturing, it takes 8 to 10 hours for 45 minutes…. and I end up with countless untitled or captured movies in my browser window…….. My question…. Is there anyway to get the data captured…? I’ve used a clean tape and re-shot and everything….. When I play it in my camera, I have no problems, but capturing it via FCP 5.0 I’m having issues…. HELP. HELP, somebody, anybody…. HELP

August 3, 2006 at 1:55 pmIt sounds like you have a tape with many breaks in the timecode. If you want to capture the entire tape in one clip, you might want to make a copy of the tape on another Firewire-equipped deck. Just go thru the Firewire cable and your copy should be as good as the original but now you will have one continuous timecode track making your capture much easier. Of course, the codes will be different, so hopefully you haven’t logged your shots using the original code numbers. If this is the case, you will need to make note of the different timecode numbers on the copy.

August 3, 2006 at 2:57 pmHey Tom and everyone,
Like you, I thought that I was having the breaks in the DV tape in my deck, and so I did as you suggested thinking if I get a clean timecode running through the entire capture, I’d be okay. That wasn’t the case. As a matter of fact, I triede to capture many of DV footage, and the same thing would happen. I believe the problem dwells somewhere in the application. It’s not taking the capture smoothly. It starts but then slows down and then stop saying ‘locating timecode’. Maybe someone else out there have had this experience.

August 3, 2006 at 3:57 pmSounds like a deck problem. FCP is just responding to what the deck is doing. And some decks are definitely flaky than others. I’ve been using a DSR-45 lately and it runs into many problems reading tapes and won’t even play some (I’ve had to use a camera deck in some cases, instead). The last deck I used was a DSR-40 and it was pretty solid.
Do you have access to another deck?

August 3, 2006 at 5:00 pmHave you cleaned the heads on either deck recently? Dirty heads can be the cause of many “malfunctions”.
For the record, my DSR-45 has been working flawlessly for three years. I’m not doubting reel2reel’s experience, but rather just letting you know that it’s not a common complaint. Most DSR-45 users I know swear by ’em.

August 3, 2006 at 10:08 pmYes, I’ve cleaned the heads… I was able to finally capture the entire footage but after review what I captured, it looks like it’s playing every 4th or 5th frame… meaning, it is NOT good still…. Now I believe it has something to do with either fps, sp-lp, or something in that area…….

Debe, I actually wasn’t insinuating that these are bad decks in general, though that’s probably what it sounded like. I know they’re great decks, in fact. I was actually surprised this deck was is so flakey. I’m wondering if it was a refurb or something. These Sony DVCAM decks are known to be workhorses, no doubt about it. The loading mechanism is just *very* picky in this particular unit.
It sounds like you’re a personally attached to this deck, debe? ;O)

August 4, 2006 at 4:41 amSorry, reel. There was no emotion in it for me.
I was merely offering a counterpoint.
