I used to edit linear tape and on Avid for my NLE exclusively until somewhere in the middle of 2000.
When I get in the client’s Avid room, it usually takes me about half a day, sometimes longer, to feel like I’m back up to full speed. I edit there for a week or longer about once every couple months these days.
Over the past 6 years, my business has slowly evolved from 90% Avid, to 70% Avid, to 50% Avid on down to now about 10% Avid. The rest of those percentages is FCP.
When I leave that room and go back to FCP, it still takes awhile to un-Avid my brain. It doesn’t take nearly as long as when I go from FCP to Avid, but I can still feel the want to do things the Avid way for a few hours when I go back to FCP.

I had a similar issue with a PAL taped shipped over from a client’s London office.
I looked into hardware and software conversion. We went with hardware because it was faster, and the producer wanted the entire field tape converted for future use. I couldn’t tie up my edit system that long.
I emailed Graeme directly and asked him the speeds of conversion using his converter. He said it’s 5x real time.
That’s a very handy number to keep in your noggin when deciding whether or not to go with hardware or software conversion.
For me, it was much easier and faster to send it out and let someone deal with it while I continued editing. Under other circumstances, I sure can see myself letting the Nattress converter do it’s thing.

I don’t have an answer for you, but I do have a suggestion.
You might get more of a response in the Premiere Pro forum. They know what Premeire can output. Most of us would be just guessing.
If I were guessing, I’d look under the Export menu in Premiere and see what the options are. But I don’t even know if Premiere calls it Export….
Find out what options Premiere has, and then come back and ask us what’s the best one for FCP.

I’m not the expert on these cards by any means, but I think the main difference between the two is that the Kona 3 will downconvert HD footage to SD when needed. The Decklink doesn’t do that.
If this is a concern for you, well…I’d investigate it if I were you because even I don’t trust my information on this one.

I have an old Blue and White G3 that reads DVD-RAM disks.
Any chance you can find someone with one of those in your area? Makes more sense than destroying the cartridge, if you can find one….

You need something that will turn the data coming out the FW connection into something a monitor can recognize, or you need an internal card…wait, you said iMac. No cards. Never mind.
You need a deck or a camcorder or a DV bridge of some sort.
There is a pretty good diagram showing proper system setup in the manual.

X11 runs alongside OSX. Some of the more techno-minded here might be better suited to explain how that works. I just know it does.
Provided you have sufficient RAM, you can have FCP running as normal under OSX, and have GIMP open as well in X11. I’ve done it successfully many times.
