Jumping back on an Avid
Posted by Eli Mavros on January 9, 2007 at 8:48 pmA gig just came up that is an Avid job. I have been working with FCP for the last 3 years, and feel a bit rusty with Avid. How long do you think it would take for someone to get back up to speed? I am very proficient with FCP, and fancied myself fast on Avid when I used to use one. I know this is kind of a tough question, since you don’t know me…but I’m looking for ballpark. I just don’t want to walk in their and not look professional.
Best,

Go download Avid’s FreeDV ASAP, load it on your MAC and do the free tutorials. Chris Poison just did the same. Its not everything, but should refresh you rmemory fast and for free…

Heck yes!!! FCP is the number one workaround NLE on the market. But, it also has more ways to do those workarounds than any other NLE. In marketing lingo its known as “outstanding flexibility.” Thats why we all love it so much, cuz it lets everyone figure out our own very inventive workarounds.

January 10, 2007 at 11:38 amI’d like the workaround that lets you sit on a beach in Cancun while someone else sells, shoots & edits….

January 13, 2007 at 1:41 amI’ve often wondered what it would be like to go back. (Lord knows I still hit Avid keyboard shortcuts _daily_. I guess a decade’s worth of practice doesn’t go away in just a few short years on another system.) Please let us know how it went.

January 13, 2007 at 7:19 pmI used to edit linear tape and on Avid for my NLE exclusively until somewhere in the middle of 2000.
When I get in the client’s Avid room, it usually takes me about half a day, sometimes longer, to feel like I’m back up to full speed. I edit there for a week or longer about once every couple months these days.
Over the past 6 years, my business has slowly evolved from 90% Avid, to 70% Avid, to 50% Avid on down to now about 10% Avid. The rest of those percentages is FCP.
When I leave that room and go back to FCP, it still takes awhile to un-Avid my brain. It doesn’t take nearly as long as when I go from FCP to Avid, but I can still feel the want to do things the Avid way for a few hours when I go back to FCP.
