The search/replace method as suggested is probably best.
Unfortunately there’s a lot of people who use word processors and even email like a typewriter, hitting the “return” key at the end of every line, rather than letting the software do an automatic word wrap.

An audio engineer friend had, as the first step on his diagnostic list: Is it plugged in?
As basic as it sounds, it was on his list because it’s something he’d overlooked before.
I have a compact “pocket” firewire drive that takes power via the 6-pin firewire cable. Larger drives no doubt require a power supply to run but hopefully what little power came through the cable might have saved your data.

You might consider getting a good mic, then connecting to your NLE via your camera’s XLR input and Firewire.
Our co-producer/on-camera talent does that for post-production voiceovers.

I’d strongly recommend using an external SATA array for storage that allows hot-swapping.
Advantages:
— Won’t further tax the cooling system of the G5
— Easy to swap drives for different major projects or clients
— Easy to add drives to expand the system’s capacity and speed
— Lowest price per gigabyte in the long runCheck out four-channel SATA cards and drive housing systems from Firmtek and Sonnett. I personally have a Firmtek system that works very well. However, there are newer systems available that will handle four drives on a single cable, rather than four seperate cables. Simplifies the mess in back of the computer.

Mike talks about SATA RAIDs that aren’t horrendously expensive yet have enough throughput for HD work. His general requirement is about 200 MB/sec, and there are quite a few solutions available which can provide that amount of throughput.
“Sonnet announces new enclosure, PCIe & PCI-X SATA cards that support up to 20 drives each”.
Firmtek also produces 2 and 4-channel SATA cards that allow hot-swapping, as well as external enclosures that are decently priced. Reliability is very good, too.

Take a look at the hot-swappable SATA hard drive setups from Firmtek.
Easily swapped out. Much simpler than assembling and disassembling an external enclosure for the sake of archive.
The sleds are about $20 so they’re not going to add too much to the price of a bare drive for storage, especially if you’re passing along the cost to the client.

Here in Hawaii, aside from a Sony factory service center, there’s a company called “Video Engineering.” Very good service. They work on broadcast equiipment. Don’t know if they work on the VX2000.

Dissolves don’t need to be rendered to play back. If you’re experiencing this, then your FCP setup needs to be reviewed.
As for lower thirds, if it’s text-only and there’s not drop shadows or effects, then it’s direcly viewable.
However, any graphics featuring alpha channels will require rendering before being able to see it in real time.
It’s also possible to set up FCP to allow you a preview of certain effects w/o rendering but it will automatically go to lower frame rates.
