I am looking into RAIDs for my PowerMac G5 FCP system.
For those of you who are on the bleeding edge of the latest gear:

Can a SATA RAID cut it for HD work (not HDV)?

What is the most economical RAID option for HD work?

I am willing to look at external or internal options (but the internal option scares me with all the heat generated in the G5)

It is my belief, and I may be nuts, that it shouldn’t cost $3k for a decent RAID for what I am trying to do.

any other input is welcome and appreciated, Thanks.

[Guy] “Can a SATA RAID cut it for HD work (not HDV)?”

Depends on the manufacturer. Some are showing tremendous speeds, but I still trust the reliability day in day out yet.

For Uncompressed HD work, economical generally doesn’t cut it. Fibre Channel is the way to go and while it’s not super expensive, it’s not cheap.

Then stick with SD, don’t go to HD. I paid about $8k for my Medea FCR2X Fibre Channel array and am going to add one or two more before the end of the year. If you want to do HD professionally and have plenty of overhead to do Uncompressed HD, be ready to spend the money.

If you don’t want to spend the money for a reliable storage solution, stay in SD or stick with DVCPro HD / HDV.

Take a look at the HDforIndies website.

    https://www.hdforindies.com/

Mike talks about SATA RAIDs that aren’t horrendously expensive yet have enough throughput for HD work. His general requirement is about 200 MB/sec, and there are quite a few solutions available which can provide that amount of throughput.

“Sonnet announces new enclosure, PCIe & PCI-X SATA cards that support up to 20 drives each”.

Firmtek also produces 2 and 4-channel SATA cards that allow hot-swapping, as well as external enclosures that are decently priced. Reliability is very good, too.
