Look at the list of events and projects in your library, then highlight the project. In the “Info” window there’s a button at the bottom, “Modify Settings”.
Click on that and a dropdown window will appear showing project name, starting timecode and . . . “Drop Frame”. That option has to be checked “On” or the exported length of the QT file will be slightly off.

Check with Video Engineering. If they can’t then they can probably recommend somewhere that does.

“Sure, I’ll miss multi-cam, but I have a hunch it will reappear”
No multicam editing???

[Don Greening] “They’ve saved many a camera connection when shooters walk away from the cameras with their headphones still on their heads, me included.”
And now the camera’s just fine but half the crew are wearing neck braces…. 🙂
That’s a good idea. I’ll have to do that to my own gear, even if it’s 1/8 to 1/8. The headphone cable is always getting snagged.

My cars are copied into folders with a “slug” followed by 8-digit date.
For example, “Marlin 2010829-1” for card 1 for that day and so on.
A letter can be added to denote which camera if there’s more than one. And, as mentioned, the camera can be set up so that there’s a unique ID for each camera in the clip name.
That said, have fun with the sub story. I’m sure it’ll feature in-depth coverage… 🙂
I did 36 hours on the USS Kamehameha back when I was at a newspaper. Spent an hour in sonar. That was a fun place to hang out.

I use “Super Duper” and make a duplicate on an internal HDD that’s inside the MacPro itself.
Then it’s just a matter of assigning it as the “boot drive”. Pretty easy to flip-flop from one to the other.

[doug nash] “why do make such a thorough copy before installing an app?”
One never knows what might trip up things. It’s just a precaution. Like wearing seatbelts or having a fire extinguisher in the house.

I did some work with it and it allows you to use all the RAM in your Mac, as opposed to the 4-gig limit.
However, Primatte and other Red Giant plug-ins that I use aren’t available for CS5 yet. Due this summer. You might want to see if your plugins are compatible before making the jump.
For any upgrade, I make a complete working copy of my HDD before installing any changes. If it doesn’t prove totally functional I can always jump back to the previous setup.

Here’s a sample of something that was shot with an SxS card. Composited in After Effects using Primatte.
If you can get HDSDI out at 4:2:2 then that would be better. But it’s pretty good with 4:2:0 sampling.

Maybe the bubble level on your tripod is broken. 🙂
If you’re getting rolling shutter distortion from rapid pans then you might want to consider using software to correct it.
With a CMOS imager there’s no getting away from rolling shutter problems. That said, you’d have to be panning really fast to get a noticeable distortion. And at that speed the audience would be much more aware of the speed of the pan before they noticed the bending of vertical lines.
