This is a super simple suggestion, so simple that I’m sure there are probably a dozen other ways to achieve this, but since I’ve been using the same script since Vegas 4 or 6, I’ve always made it the first thing I add after a fresh install and never looked for a better way. Now this seems like a no-brainer but Vegas couldn’t do it when I started using it so I downloaded a script called SelectEventsFromCursor. Wherever you are on the timeline, regardless of how many clips may be at where your cursor is, or if there are no events there but there are more past it, you simply select all of them from the cursor forward. Then you can drag them around, mash them up against the clips before them, or if you just want the video and keep the audio that’s underneath where it is, just deselect that track and continue moving. I have mine bound to Ctrl+w and probably hit it about 50-100 times a day.
It’s like changing to the Selection Edit Tool, zooming all the way out on your timeline and selecting everything from the cursor forward, except a heck of a lot faster.

Well I’m in an NTSC region so I tend to render standard definition footage at 640×480 with the MainConcept AVC/AAC just for easy to use mp4 files. You could tweak the settings for PAL standard but I wonder if you wouldn’t prefer upscaling to 720p. I know the footage’s native resolution isn’t HD but YouTube is free and will recompress the footage to different streams anyway. Everyone is using widescreen monitors these days so you may want to change your timeline to 720p, and either crop the image a little and add a sharpening filter or fill in the sides with some sort of graphics or a blurred out zoom of the footage in the middle. Even if you just left it as black bars, the viewers would probably rather see 576 resolution video upscaled and sharpened than have youtube downscale it to 720p.
I’ve been shooting HD for so long now I don’t know if any other editors who occasionally work with SD footage would chime in on if that’s a good option?

Geez you’re right. After all these years I’ve successfully turned into my father, who to this day still maintains a database using Informix in DOS. Of course it’s my responsibility to make sure he can still emulate DOS in a 64 bit Windows 7 environment.
I guess it’s time for me to have kids so one day they can make sure I can still run Vegas Pro 13 in Chrome OS 27.

On the other hand, every month you stick with Vegas is money you haven’t wasted on Adobe’s subscription. For me Vegas will die the slowest death possible, because I own it outright so I won’t be switching to anything until there’s a compelling reason to lose money on a feature I don’t already have and now need.
I imagine I can stick with Vegas long enough that Catalyst will either get good or it may even crash and burn and Sony could restart Vegas development in just a few years’ time. The future is uncertain. I remember a time when Premiere was so bad I’d have never guessed it would eventually become so huge.

This is pretty ridiculous. If you want to gouge customers like Adobe you really need your software to become an industry benchmark FIRST, then move to a subscription. They have Vegas Pro which was never hugely popular to begin with, but threw it out the window to start with something new and are making it subscription based already? Good luck with that, Sony. I’ll stick with Vegas 11 since I have issues with 12 and 13.

We must have the same boss. It took me forever to get him to start selling “Blu-ray Discs” to clients instead of “Blue-ray HD-DVDs”
John mentioned the hassle of attaching captions to any kind of downloadable format but it sounds like your boss just wants this on YouTube to embed on a website so I’d go that route with an mp4 and caption file and skip any sort of download.

All Blu-ray players put out 1080p so they must do h/ware conversion from 25i to progressive.”I was really hoping that the HD revolution would have done away with either PAL or NTSC entirely and just created a universal format. If all your tv’s are required to support 24p and 60p, what do we really need 25p and 50p for anymore? I feel like everyone is watching our stuff on cell phones now anyway. Don’t you love it when you send a client a preview of a video and you can tell it had no resonating impact because all you hear back is “Alright, looks fine. -Sent from my iPhone”

Probably worth noting that Steam does have an offline mode you can switch to, unless the software you’re using has Steam DRM and specifically requires you to be logged in every time you use it. I’ve no reason to think Vegas uses that unless Sony has said something? For people who keep their edit computer completely offline just using Steam in the first place would be a pain in the neck so I wouldn’t bother with it. For gamers who do I’d say $260 is a great deal.

Alright gamers, we know you’ve been pirating Vegas for years to edit your Call of Duty YouTube videos. Now’s your chance to step up and buy a legit copy. Let’s broaden Vegas’s base and maybe we’ll see a Vegas 14 after all.
Also I hope people with copies of Vegas will be given Steam codes to register it in Steam. I think it’d be hilarious to see how much time I spend with Vegas open after a year since it tracks that info. And heck, throw in Achievements and Steam Trading Cards while you’re at it. I want a Platinum Trophy for most NewBlueFX transitions used in a photo montage!
