  • Confused over DVDA and Blu-Ray

I had replied in earlier thread – but it may be getting buried, so bringing this out as separate thread.

Movie Studio 12 and DVDA studio 5

I want to end up with the standard Full HD 1080p 16:9 playback (for Europe)

Following advice here I rendered each sub project using MainConcept 1920×1080, 50 – using settings on template as shown:

Each file comes out as: 1920×1080 Frame rate 25.000 fps Interlaced

The issue I have is when I drop them into DVDA, under project properties it shows:

Which option should I be using for disc creation ?

There is no 25p option, so do I leave it at 25i, or should I see 50i – should I see any ‘progressive’ option ?

Just want to be sure before I commit to burning a disc.

Looks OK to me, but at this point, I’d recommend you get a re-writable disc and simply “try it”.

Rick, According to the Blu-ray specifications, there is no option for 50P when authoring a 1920×1080 resolution BD project. The frame rates shown/available in your project are accurate to the resolution chosen. If your project was 1280×720, then 50P would be an option.

For 1920 or 1440 x 1080 these are the fps allowed.
    2997i
    25i
    23976p
    24p

    For 1280 x 720.
    59.94p
    50p
    23976p
    24p

Which option should I be using for disc creation ?
    >> Choose the 25i option.

    Hope this helps, Rob

RE discs arrived today ……….. wanted to check before I commit to disc … due to time to burn.

So when TV’s quote 1080p ….. how does 25i Blu-ray become progressive ? ……. or is that just something hardware takes care of.

When I first started using SMS12P and DVDA5, I had a lot of questions. The best advise I received was, “stop over thinking it”. The 2nd best advise I received was “get some re-writable disc”. I continued on asking questions, but settled down to make some shorts and experiment to see the results. The third best advise was, “defaults may not provide the very best results, but usually they provide the best overall”.

Therefore I think wwaag has the best reply, “Looks OK to me, but at this point, I’d recommend you get a re-writable disc and simply “try it”.”

    Best Regards…..George

[Rob Aubey] “According to the Blu-ray specifications, there is no option for 50P when authoring a 1920×1080 resolution BD project.”

Rob is correct. The Blu-ray committee was too concerned with supporting 80 year old interlaced technology than making a giant leap forward to progressive so we are still stuck in the past… no 50p or 60p.

[Rob Aubey] “Choose the 25i option.”

    +1

That is really your only option for Blu-ray.

Thanks – it is the fact we have 1080p HD TV was causing my concern.
So there is no progressive video at all in Blu-ray disc spec?

Anyway created the disc at 25i and it seems to play fine.

    Thanks to all for help.

Glad it’s working. For your info, a 1080P TV automatically de-interlaces your 1080i footage and displays it as progressive. Hence, the designation 1080P. Doesn’t mean that your footage has to be 1080P. I must admit, it’s a bit confusing.

[Rick Hughes] “So there is no progressive video at all in Blu-ray disc spec?”

Yes there is. 720p is supported by Blu-ray but not 1080p. Now you really have to ask yourself what were they thinking???

Doesn’t the spec also support progressive at 1080 with 24 (23.76)fps?
