  • The “best” template is always one you customize yourself based on the source videos you’re editing and how the rendered videos will be used. You mention 4k at 60fps and then you mention lower resolution at 172 frames per second. Are you actually shooting 4k at 172 frames per second? Just cranking every slider up to max settings isn’t the right way to achieve a good looking product. Could we have more details on your source material and how the final product is used?

You didn’t mention how large the original file is or what bitrate it uses. If you want to keep it that size you’ll have to alter the render bitrate to the same amount. I would think a 4:19 minute 1080p mp4 file at a decent bitrate would be exactly what you got, around 350mb. If you want to go smaller you’ll sacrifice quality but I’m guessing the source file you’re working with is already lower quality if it’s significantly smaller.

Either way, the solution is if you want a smaller file, lower the bitrate of the render.

[John Rofrano] “That depends. What can’t you do with Vegas Pro now that you were hoping to do in the future?”

How would we know? The future hasn’t happened yet. Hard to predict industry changes down the road. I’m gonna hold onto Vegas 11 and 13 for dear life. If there’s a demo of Catalyst I might try it one day, but Vegas fits my style of editing so perfectly it would have to be pretty darn similar for me to transition. It’s the end of an era for sure.

You’ll always be Soundforge Vegas 4 in my heart.

  • Thanks for the reply. I just noticed at the very bottom of the Render screen I forgot to scroll down far enough to select “Use Project Output Rotation Setting.” Just a simple case of never needing and option and having it out of sight when you do!

[Danny Hays] “Are you guys manually white balancing your cameras before you record? If a camera is set to auto white balance and sees a lot of a particular color, like green tablecloths, the camera will compensate and can make that green not look right.”

I most definitely manually white balance. Trust me it’s not like the whole image is off, it’s just that one type of fabric for like 5 years straight. Didn’t do it on our old Sony DSR-300’s in the mid-2000’s. There’s just something about that one tablecloth that the chips in the pwm ex1’s didn’t like. Not the end of the world, and unless you had a second camera of a different make you’d have nothing to compare it to, so people watching the video 10 years from now won’t be upset.

[Nigel O'Neill] “Purple satin fabric would come out ruby red and almost flat”

I’ve been using EX1’s since 2008 and know exactly what you mean. There was a graduation I used to shoot every year that had a green satin drape on the table for the diplomas and it always came out sort of flat and brownish. Weirdest thing.

April 9, 2015 at 5:09 am in reply to: Stabilizing in Sony Vegas Pro 13?

[Steve Rhoden] “The built in stabler has quirks and limitations, will always have.”

I feel like this is the reason for so many plugins. At what point do we get to start demanding that if Sony wants us to keep paying to upgrade Vegas, they need to improve its functionality and maybe negate our need for some of these external editors? I know Adobe has the money to simply buy up companies who make better plugins than some of their built-in options, then incorporate their technology into their package. If Sony doesn’t have the resources yet I’d like to give them permission to pilfer some of the money I’ve given their Playstation division for the past 20 years to upgrade Vegas for version 14 🙂

January 9, 2015 at 7:43 pm in reply to: Sony Vegas 11 issues

Vegas is so random. Vegas 11 build 701 is my rock solid build that I keep returning to after every instance of 12 and 13. Sometimes I wish computers were like gaming consoles and software just ran the same on everyone’s systems, but the freedom of configuration we have is worth all the hassles.

January 2, 2015 at 5:25 pm in reply to: OK. So, what’s Sony Vegas lacking?

I guess the fact that it doesn’t come bundled with Adobe AfterEffects is a drawback in the industry? For my money what it’s lacking is consistency across PC’s. I have so many installations of different versions of Vegas on different computers/laptops that have completely different hang-ups from each other. At least in our office the Adobe Premiere installs are consistent in their crashing and render problems 😛

As people have always said on these boards, it’s the artist, not the tools, so I’ll stick with Vegas because I love the interface and the way it lets my editing flow, but it sure would be nice if they could put the kind of resources into software development that Adobe does, although I’ll be damned if I pay a subscription for software. Did you guys happen to see the Sony commercial on tv a couple months ago, where it was all about a guy writing a script that gets bought by sony pictures, shot on sony cameras, released in theaters on sony projectors, yadda yadda yadda until some lady sees the movie in a store while shopping for a Sony TV? Sort of a soup to nuts ad about how Sony can do it all. Well the one step they conveniently left out was editing on Sony software and I thought gee wouldn’t it be nice if they took enough pride in that division to make it ad-worthy.

December 17, 2014 at 8:57 pm in reply to: Repeated Flickering in Rendered Files

Is this a persistent flickering or is there just one black frame inserted here and there in your render, always changing spots? I described that issue in a previous post, it’s something I’ve always had with each version of Vegas 13 that I only solve by pasting my timeline into Vegas 11 and rendering. It most often happens when I’ve added any kind of rotation to a frame, so that if I remove it sometimes it renders that part fine but black frames pop up somewhere else. Also has happened when doing chroma keying where it’ll only put the black frame on the background and not the subject in front of it. Very weird but you’re certainly not the first to get this issue. If you find a magic fix let us know.
