I asked the exact same thing about a week ago and the consensus seemed to be no, they haven’t offered that this time around. Frankly I’d gladly pay the full $200 for an upgrade to get the Mercalli V4 software it comes with, but I’ve been doing the one week trial for Vegas 14 and it’s nothing but crashes on my system.

  • Wow, I downloaded the trial on my home computer and it’s crashing like crazy and running way worse than Vegas 11. It renders fine but if this isn’t going to just run perfectly out of the box I don’t think it’s worth $200 and a day or two of troubleshooting. Glad most people don’t seem to be having these problems though.

Thanks for mentioning your Spam folder, I never thought to look there since Sony’s e-mails always came through to me just fine and the earlier full version purchase offer came to my inbox, but sure enough their upgrade offer for $200 was there, which isn’t too appealing but I might get if it solves the problems I had with 12 and 13. As for first impressions check László’s thread.

  • This is all very promising, thanks for your feedback and keep it coming if you discover anything else. Out of curiosity what GPU card do you have?

Now I just need to wait for Magix to offer me some sort of 13 -> 14 upgrade path.

I’d say nothing beats Photodex Gold for quickly and easily slapping together a montage of photographs in a hurry. I can also tell you nothing beats Vegas for having complete control and flexibility over a montage that could involve any type of media. I’ve been doing photo montages since the 90’s and since switching to Vegas full-time in 2006 I’ve never looked back, aside from using Photodex on-site occasionally where you have to ingest photos and make a montage of them immediately.

Magix also has a discount through September 22 on their Photo Story Deluxe software which looks like it has a somewhat similar interface to Vegas but I’ve never used.

Can I ask what the deal was? The only e-mail I ever got was the offer to upgrade any version of Vegas to 13 and get 14 free on release for $200. I was waiting on an upgrade from 13 to 14 which is normally around $130 if I recall. Are they not doing that this time around or did they neglect to send me an offer?

For something due out within 2 weeks you’d think we’d have heard more about detailed features and support. Did they get anyone a discounted upgrade deal yet? Sony used to do that well ahead of release right?

Ron makes a good point that there’s really no benefit to more pixels if you’re happy with how things look at the size monitor you have. I like how 1920×1200 looks at 24″ so I’d only go 1440p if I were moving to maybe a 26″, and I wouldn’t think of 4k unless I was going at least 30″, which would require me clearing all these ancient DVD/Blu-Ray copy towers off my desk.

Although I never buy Dell computers, I’ve been a fan of their monitors for a while, especially since IPS came out. Still have my 24″ but if I do switch to a larger 1440p in the future I’ll probably go with Dell again.

  • With Magix taking over Vegas and version 14 not far off, I just can’t see building a new rig with specific benefits in mind until we know what additions are planned for Vegas 14. I’d say build a pc with an i7 and no graphics card right now if you must. You’ll always see a benefit from having a fast CPU. As for the GPU, let’s wait and see if Magix optimizes anything more than just FX to make use of it, and what old third-party FX plugins even work in the new version. For all we know everything could flip and they might get more from Nvidia cards this generation than AMD. Too much in the air to drop several hundred on assumptions I think.
