At first I was freaking out about how much they changed the “Render As…” screen, because I hate change and it looked less efficient than what I’m used to. It would be nice if they’d make the size of the list dynamic with the window size, but overall I’m getting used to it and view it as an improvement. The title options seem like a nice improvement. One thing I dislike is that the FX adjustment windows now use the same size/location as the event pan/crop window. I really benefit from those each using their own sizes so that’s a step in the wrong direction for me personally. Can’t wait to install it on my home PC where I can make use of my 560 GTX.

I’ll be upgrading just for the gpu-enhanced features. Normally Mike or someone here posts a link to a discounted upgrade offer before each release, so I’ll have to keep my eye out.

You don’t have to convert GoPro files before you drag them onto the timeline, but when you go to export them as HD XDCAM files you’re going to need to render them.

GPU acceleration is huge. When Adobe Premiere finally came out with the CUDA-accelerated preview, I was able to get our entire office (except me who was already on Vegas) to switch from FCP on macs to Premiere on pc’s I built myself for a lot less money. If Vegas 10 had GPU acceleration, we could all be using Vegas right now instead of just me. So Sony was behind the curve on this one and we’ve spent too much on Abode software to switch over to Vegas now, but at the very least I can use this as an excuse to beef up my work PC to take advantage of it.
I already bought a GTX 560 card at home in anticipation of Battlefield 3 this fall, so it’s nice when my work and my hobbies can fall in line in terms of hardware demands 🙂

Just yesterday I had to cram 2.5 hours on a single-layer DVD-R (It’s okay it was just a timecode window burn) and DVDA said it would take up 5.3GB I think. It burned onto a 4.7 just fine. DVDA is a liar, ignore it.

Although the cheaper alternative would be to buy a PC with Vegas for the other editor. She could buy two or three for the same cost of getting herself a decent FCP setup. That’s basically what we did for our FCP freelancers when we (everyone but me) at the office switched to Premiere Pro. John is right, everyone has to be on the same page.

Well we have CS5 Premiere with nvidia 470 gtx cards at the office and the preview sure is nice being gpu accelerated. I stick with Vegas because I love the interface but the limited preview is definitely my least favorite feature. On the other hand Premiere has a lot of convoluted ways it does other things that I’m sure glad I don’t have to deal with.
One reason it’d be nice to have the option is that I’m sure some people out there still have core2duo systems and it’d be nice for them to just drop a new video card in their system for a performance boost rather than having to build a whole new pc.

I would prefer Mercury playback on nvidia cards like Mercury already does, but if they made a deal to do the same kind of thing with ATI cards it would definitely get me to switch to ATI/AMD.

Could you please explain that to all my clients. I still get people who ask how many copies of their wedding they get on CD. Some people will just always see “shiny plastic disc” and think they’re all the same. The next format should be put on triangles just to force people to realize it’s different.

We used the Kensington SxS adapters until Hoodman came out with theirs (we could finally close the card slot door!) and have been using nothing but SanDisk Extreme 16gb cards. I will say the boss was at a trade show and bought one 32gb Transcend card because it was so cheap, and we had one problem wherein a clip folder was created with the reference files but no actual mp4 file in it. It happened one time and I forbade him from ever using it again so he put it in his Canon 60D for taking stills. I haven’t had a problem with SanDisk but you may want the Hoodman brand if you want piece of mind with the warranty.
