By outboard devices, I was referring to firestore/cineporter type devices, which was mentioned in the original post, Barry.

Within that context, there are no outboard devices in HD format like the Firestore or Cineporter.

The issue is that they need to be 32-bit, and USB isn’t, and there are no firewire readers.

The most economical decision is to get a laptop, Mac or PC, with a card bus slot.

Cheaper than anything else, and the laptop is included.

I think Panasonic is missing the boat here.

Give us a 32-bit firewire card reader for $200.00 and you’ll sell a million of them.

Currently, there are no outboard devices other than FCP 5.x through the firewire port that you can record to.

FireStore and Cineporter are two outboard devices to permit recording directly via firewire – both to be released in the coming months.

You cannot record to any firewire hard drive currently.

You can transfer p2 footage to a self powered, not bus powered firewire device.

    Hope this helps

That USB reader is not 32-bit.

I don’t believe any USB readers are 32-bit

My research has disclosed that no 32-bit readers for PCI slots exist for the Mac.

Panny might have missed the boat this one.

[Greg Jones] “Any ideas on easily backing up files in the field easily?”

    Easily? No.

Blu ray or HD DVD holds promise

In expensive HDs are the only way to go now.,
