Need a P2 Viewer for the Mac
Posted by David Garcia on February 11, 2006 at 3:17 pmI just want to voice my need for a P2 viewing utility on the MAC. As it now stands, I have to convert all my files to quicktime just to look at them. This is not good. It doubles the space the files are taking up and loses the MXF stuff. It also makes the P2 effectively slower then shooting tape and reviewing footage. At least on a tape I can look at what I shot and discard the bad stuff. (I don’t want to hear that I shoud do it in camera. When I’m shooting, I’m shooting not reviewing.)
I like the HVX. The footage looks good. The lens is nice. We just bought two for our shop with P2 stores. We need a viewing utility (or MXF support in FCP6.)
Conclude rant.

February 11, 2006 at 11:54 pmEveryone, please request MXF support from Apple. They need to hear us, because that is the one missing element in an almost perfect editing system.
A proper P2 Viewer for the Mac would be most ideal as well.
Jan, NAB can not come quickly enough! 🙂

February 13, 2006 at 4:47 amJan, I hope there are no unpleasant “surprises” for those of us who have already bought this camera, paid $1400 a piece for two 8Gb cards and invested in a P2 Store.

February 13, 2006 at 12:11 pmHi Robby,
And what do you think those unpleasant surprises would be? This thread was about a P2 viewer for a MAC, how would that be unpleasant for you?
Best,
Jan

February 13, 2006 at 4:41 pmFirst of all, I have purchased and received all that I mentioned (HVX-200, two 8Gb cards and the P2 store). I love what I have seen so far, accept of course for the MAC workflow issues which are deplorable. I am just concerned that I’m going to have egg on my face if the P2 store is rendered obsolete in less than 2 months. This package was alarge purchase for our company, and it was my decision to pull the trigger. Its just that I have been burned before buying this close to NAB (though I ordered my package months ago), so I am hopeful that as someone who invested early in your product, I will be pleasantly surprised by what I find at NAB.

February 14, 2006 at 12:22 amGod the idea of P2 being obsolete with something that would come out at NAB is frightening. I can’t see how that would happen though… Can someone describe this nightmare scenerio? I know the new Mac PCExpress slots need an adapter for the P2 cards. Is that all that we should expect? Why would Apple not bring full support of all media and formats into its supported infrastructure? I know it doesn’t support Sony’s XDCAM at least for now. But how would NAB spell the end of P2?
I’m not sure I really understood Jan’s last comment. Do people feel more or less assured that FCP is going to support Panasonic’s MXF?
Is what people refer to as a “P2 viewer” a third party program for Macs that allows you to scroll through a directory of MXF clips, review their meta data, and watch them? My idea of native support within FCP is that importing the clips into FCP doesn’t unwrap the MXF file into a QT file, or at least it allows for full integration of P2 MXF metadata within FCP’s project files?
A little help connecting the dots… thanks
