Back-up firewire recording simultaneously to P2
Posted by Ron Mccoy on March 10, 2006 at 6:59 pmNew HVX-200 user, reviewed some capture now FCP settings but wondering if you can record to Firewire Drive and P2 cards simutaneously?
How will the new “Firstore” prodict achieve this?
In the mean time can I recored to Firewire, or.. is that only on the Tape side of the camera?Real (Ron) McCoy

March 10, 2006 at 7:44 pmHow do you record to firewire?
Do you mean you want to record to a hard drive and the P2 card at teh same time?

March 10, 2006 at 8:29 pmCurrently, there are no outboard devices other than FCP 5.x through the firewire port that you can record to.
FireStore and Cineporter are two outboard devices to permit recording directly via firewire – both to be released in the coming months.
You cannot record to any firewire hard drive currently.
You can transfer p2 footage to a self powered, not bus powered firewire device.
Hope this helps

March 10, 2006 at 8:44 pmThanks for the reply, I’ve seen specs on the Cineporter using a P2 card connector and I have an earlier Firestore that worked
extremely well with my DVX-100. I’ll learn to do the “P2 shuffle” until a better firewire drive solution becomes available. Is there any rationale to copy MXF files from P2 to Hard drive (faster) than importing P2 via FCP?
When I tried the copy mode from P2 mode on my 17″ laptop then tried to import I gota file recognition problems, I thought I copies off all of the text files as well. Is it slower going through FCP since it’s dealinhg with a QT wrapper?

March 10, 2006 at 11:33 pmOn my PB it is faster to import directly from P2 into FCP.
I did a test and copied the P2 files to the HD and that seemed to
take 2 -3 times as long. And then you would have to import them
into FCP anyway. I back-up the QT files. -

Not correct. There’s the AJ-HD1200A DVCPRO-HD deck, there’s Avid XPress Pro HD and Media Composer systems, there’s Canopus Edius Broadcast, there’s the capability (for whatever reason) to use another HVX through firewire as a capture device, or there’s some new forthcoming P2 deck that you should be able to capture with. And a few weeks from now the FireStore should be available.

March 11, 2006 at 5:06 pmBy outboard devices, I was referring to firestore/cineporter type devices, which was mentioned in the original post, Barry.
Within that context, there are no outboard devices in HD format like the Firestore or Cineporter.

March 11, 2006 at 10:58 pmDavid and everyone,
[David Saraceno] “like the Firestore or Cineporter”
I’m curious why no one ever mentions the CitiDisk Unit on this forum:
Nearly half the price of Firestore or Cineporter, more compact and a variety of mounting options? I know that they had some real problems with their initial DV offering several years ago, but those seem to have been worked out nicely. I just talk to a guy who’s had two DV units for nearly two years with zero problems.
Like the other units, it’s not quite out yet, but may beat both of the others to the starting line.

Because despite it what appears, you can only use this to download footage from the cam or p2 card, not capture directly except for DV25, as I understand it.

Zowie, kinda a problem, I’d say. We’ll see what they have to say and show at NAB.
