You will have to transcode to a format readable by your Windows app. Final Cut is not the problem in this case, so don’t blame Apple. In fact, Apple threw lots of money at HDV and figured out how to handle it long before any of the other NLE manufacturers. Matrox Axio with Premiere Pro has announced that it can handle HDV native now, but its a very expensive solution.
I’d advise that you keep your eyes and ears open, cuz editing native HDV isn’t all that its cracked up to be in all situations. After doing a great deal of homework on the subject, I’m convinced that converting to DVCPro 100 at some point during editing is the best way to go. I will most likely edit my next project HDV native, but then I plan to convert the finished cut to DVCPro 100 before rendering all final titles and effects.

Combustion would be my tool of choice… I’d try bluring the spot with a feathered edge if I were you. Last year I had to use some stock footage acquired from CBS, which was only availble with their bug, and they made the provision that we had to remove it. We put an eliptical blur on with the feather I mentioned, and it worked very well. That CBS bug was much more prominent than your lens spot I’d assume…

Is there a good reason you are not capturing DV via firewire? I own an Extreme card, but when it comes to DV material, I much prefer firewire as it carries audio, video, and timecode.

Given that HD programming represents less than 1% all available television programming, any place that doesn’t show you SD is worth writing off immediately unless you are in the market for an open box product, because I assure you, that place gets lots of returns…

A Blackmagic card, such as Extreme, will allow you to capture, monitor, and output DV using the photo-JPEG codec.

Check the particle effects in Motion, you might be surprised how judicious use of those effects can do the job…
