  • Help – playing hdv files captured in FCP on a windows PC?

Posted by Pablo2099 on September 17, 2005 at 2:09 pm

This is really starting to tic me off – I have a bunch of hdv files originally captured via FCP on a mac. The files came without an extension and on my pc, placing .mov at the end opens the clip up in quicktime 7 and plays sound but no video.

The quicktime ap cleverly says that it cant find the codec and that perhapse the apple website may offer a 3rd party option. It opens up the website but alas – no help whatsoever(this must be an example of that wonderful apple user-friendlyness I hear so much about)

I was under the impression FCP captured HDV in a native format so why in gods name cant I view these HDV files on a PC equiped with the latest Quicktime 7???

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Ta

You will have to transcode to a format readable by your Windows app. Final Cut is not the problem in this case, so don’t blame Apple. In fact, Apple threw lots of money at HDV and figured out how to handle it long before any of the other NLE manufacturers. Read the following document, it will shed light on some of the development issues. https://images.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/pdf/20050627_HDV_FAQ.pdf

Ran into the same problem… Downloaded lots of codecs including MPEG2 for quicktime… blah, no luck. Eventually changed the file extention to .avi and loaded it into movie maker! HAHA, worked fine. This is probably not the best solution, but it worked for me in a pinch.
