Whoa nelly!!! Hold your horses… And, in keeping with the horse mataphor, you’re putting the cart before the horse here, and meanwhile compressing your video too many times.

First, how long is the finished project?

Next… MPEG2 is already a very lossy and highly compressed format — taking that another step and compressing it again with the Real Encoder will yield horrific results that will nullify all the time and thought you put into the project. Do yourself and the client a favor and deliver a lossless QT file. I’ll gladly help you figure out exactly what codec and settings to use…

I would imagine this 300 million dollar slap on the wrist was probably expensed a long time ago on their profit projections. And, I’ll bet they pay no US taxes whatsoever.

Many people who simply upgrade encounter problems, the simplest way to avoid problems is a clean install. Hard drives are so cheap now, just get a new one and put it inside in place of your old one. I’m with you on this one… Going the other direction, from PAL to NTSC, dupes would be expected. Frame blending is what I expect going NTSC to PAL.

According to a very thorough test I read, 2.5 gigs is the sweet spot when considering both cost and performance. There are performance benefits when RAM is increased to 4gb, but for most users those benefits may not be enough to justify the additional cost. There are many here who will undoubtedly argue that more RAM is better — depending on indivdual workflow they may be correct. BTW, HDV performance is more related to processor and drive speed than RAM.

I apologize for the pilot error comment, and additionally, I tried it out and cross dissolves do work before and after a gap. On the other hand, I have FCP 5, Tiger, Blackmagic card, and drivers, yet the cross dissolve is working on my system. Hope you figure out you problem.

I’m relatively new to FCP, and I only know ver. 5, but I’m guessing that perhaps they’ve made a change, cuz I’ve been using fade in – fade out dissolve for this type of transition since I started, because cross dissolve wouldn’t work. I may be completely worng, but something tells me that all you need to do is try a slightly different transition…
