The festival is using this term incorrectly. The color bars they require are SMPTE color bars, which include a “pluge pattern” used for proper setup of monitor contrast and brightness. The pluge pattern consists of the three dark bars at the lower right – superblack, black, and gray. Adjust the monitor brightness until there is no discernable difference between superblack and black, but there is a difference between black and gray.

Why are you controlling the deck using lanc rather than firewire?

If you are compressing from the timeline it can take a very long time to encode to MPEG. Have you tried exporting a QT first, and then encoding???

That would depend on many factors, but more than likely the answer is no.

If it will only be played on computer monitors then deinterlace, but if it will also be viewed on TVs then don’t.

Dear Q,
Your thinking is a bit off on this, and you’re doing way too many steps. All you need to do is encode using one of the DVD presets in Compressor, making sure to check the anamorphic 16×9 box. This will yeild a DVD that will play 16×9 full screen on a 16×9 TV, and letterboxed 16×9 on a 4×3 TV.

This problem happens more with some encoders than others, and with some authoring programs more than others, and especially so if the authoring program is, unbeknown to the user, re-encoding the material. There are many ways of creating DVDs with FCP, and you haven’t mentioned what software you’re using for encoding and authoring, or the bitrate of your MPEG2 encode — these are essential if you want to get an informed answer to your question.

Thanks Nick, you have indeed coverd all the bases. I suspect they want a 16.x9 anamorphic, but as you say, I’d better check beforehand.
