Tape setup requirements for festival submission
Posted by Paul Kondo on December 9, 2005 at 9:33 pmI just received a document from a festival. The festival requires the following setup. I’m assuming that I need to do this on the timeline before this gets transferred to Sony HDCam by the post-house. If I do need to do this in FCPHD, how do I do this? It also says nothing about needing to start on any specific timecode. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Tape set-up:
1. Zero IRE black level (setup)

December 9, 2005 at 9:47 pmYou can do all of this in either the “Print to Tape” or “Edit to Tape” windows that pop up. Click the “Mastering Settings” tab and enter both the duration and dB of your Bars, and the duration of black before the program starts.
OK wait. I’d just have the post-house add bars and tone to those specifications when they output to tape. Those guidelines are more for them than you if you are not doing the mastering yourself.

December 10, 2005 at 4:06 pmPardon the lack of intellect on this topic. I just want to make sure I’m doing it correctly.
– Color bars. I will use the NTSC color bars in FCP. I had never heard the term “SMPTE PLUGe Bars” before so I didn’t know if that was something different.
– Zero IRE black. How do I put that in the timeline? I assume it’s more complicated than just putting a black matte or slug in the timeline. That’s what I’m confused about.
Thanks,
PK

There’s no such thing as a silly question, there are only silly answers.
[PK] “I had never heard the term “SMPTE PLUGe Bars” before”
The festival is using this term incorrectly. The color bars they require are SMPTE color bars, which include a “pluge pattern” used for proper setup of monitor contrast and brightness. The pluge pattern consists of the three dark bars at the lower right – superblack, black, and gray. Adjust the monitor brightness until there is no discernable difference between superblack and black, but there is a difference between black and gray.
Hope this helps…

A slug. Just look at your scope when you put the slug in, you’ll see it’s Zero.
