Shane,
I know what you trying to say, and your thought process is correct, but techically speaking, and just for the record, in this case “handles” are actually the opposite of what is called for, because there are no extra frames at the very tail and head of the clip, and that is why the transition is rejected. Yes, you need extra frames to work with, but the way to achieve that is to “cut in” or trim back half the required number of frames on both sides of the cut. Trust me, you’re getting this from a film editor of many, many years, so don’t argue this one.

[jmf] “I don’t think he is asking why the clip does not appear correct, but why does FCP reject an attempt to establish an effect. Adding frames assuming you can add an effect and is only relevant to placement.”
That’s not true at all. What Shane and I both communicated in our own ways is that you cannot apply a transition between two clips if there are no frames to cover the transition. In other words, if you attempt to apply a transition at the very tail of the A shot and at the very head of the B shot you’re out of luck.

As Frank said, you must have extra frames on the tail of clip A and the head of clip B whenever placing a transition bewteen two clips on the timeline. So, if you have a 30 frame dissolve, at a minimum you must cut back 15 frames off of the tail of the outgoing shot and cut in 15 frames into the head of the incoming shot. Does that make sense?

[Maria Luisa Gambale] “I just didn’t think I had incurred that need after only one week of mild use. Thank you very much.”
Maria,
There is no logic to anything related to problems arising out of corrupted prefs, so no amount of thinking about it will do any good. When FCP starts behaving as though its possessed, just trash your prefs without hesitation. 98% of the time you’ll find things are fixed.

Tore,
I would certainly post this issue on the Flash Forum and see what the gurus there say on the square pixel issue. I’ve never heard of that before with regard to video export to Flash, but maybe this new info.
With regard to export as Quicktime Animation codec with millions of colors+, that’s appropriate if you need the alpha channel, if noty then all you need to do export as Quicktime Animation codec with millions of colors and not the +. That makes the files smaller.

Tore,
Find out exactly why the programmer wants video with square pixels and post that reason here. I think you’re liable to get some very interesting responses. Typically you will find that Flash programmers know a lot about Web stuff and very little about video.

A question for you. If you’re not a professional, why the heck do you need to spend $575 for an outboard color corrector?
As far as exporting a QT file from FCP and working on in After Effects, thats no big deal.

No Steven, a “replicator” is the way to go for 1000 plus copies, not a duplicator. DVD replication is the method professional DVDs are pressed from a glass master rather than burned as in duplication. Replicated DVDs are 100% compatible, while burned DVDs have about 85% compatibility.

You never mention what programs. Whic programs are you referring to?
Also, at any good electronics/TV store you can get RCA to BNC adapters to enable connecting a standard consumer component cable between a card with BCN connectors to a TV with RCA inputs. Or voice versa, get a professional component cable with BNC connections and get BNC to RCA adapters.

As Frank says. 8-bit should really do the job, but 10-bit is better if you have the drive throughput. If your SATA drives are striped together you can do 10-bit, if not you should stick with 8-bit.
