  • Export Quicktime from FCP to use Color Finesse in AE 6.5?

Posted by Ephraim Jones on January 2, 2006 at 11:53 pm

I’ve been reading about the great advantages and features of Color Finesse. I have AE 6.5 with Color Finesse but I do all of my work in FCP 5 and Motion 2. I’m not a pro user, so I really want to avoid purchasing Automatic Duck and the FCP version of Color Finesse. What or will there be any issues to importing my exported Quicktime file from FCP or Motion using Export-Quicktime Movie into AE6.5 and using Color Finesse in that application? These files are destined ultimately for DVDSP.

    [E Jones] “I’m not a pro user”

A question for you. If you’re not a professional, why the heck do you need to spend $575 for an outboard color corrector?

As far as exporting a QT file from FCP and working on in After Effects, thats no big deal.

The full version of Color Finesse comes packaged with AE Pro 6.5 which I purchased in 2004. I made my way through two of the Trish Meyer books, so I have a pretty good basic understanding of working with the program. I found that using Motion and FCP was better for me and the learning curve for Motion is not quite as steep as AE. I don’t use AE any more, but the Color Finesse plugin would certainly be a benefit to use without having to buy the FCP version, hence my question. When I say I’m not a pro, I mean I don’t do work for hire, I work primarily on my own projects for small, limited distribution. Even though I’m not a pro, I like my output to be as high quality as possible.

    Thanks for your help!

You can certainly export a QuickTime movie from FCP then import that into AE for color correction in CF. The down-side is that your entire show will appear in AE as one layer. If you used Pro Import AE to get from FCP to AE then each clip would be a separate layer in AE, a real nice thing when you’re color correcting.

I can certainly echo what Wes is saying here. I use automatic duck all the time to get timelines from FCP to AE for color correction in CF. I used QT reference files a long time ago and would NEVER go back. It will work, but it will get very messy on anything other than a really short program.
