Charlie,
Try openning a new project and moving the essential timelines and bins from your old project into this new project. That was suggested here by some very experienced editors, and it seems to really work whne things get sluggish.

If all you have is the DVD and none of the underlying files, thats a bit of bitch. It will require ripping the DVD, demuxing the audio, converting to PAL, reauthoring, etc. etc., etc. And, it will certainly require outboard apps not in the FCP toolkit. If you’re still game I’m sure many here will give you tips about the apps they use for ripping etc., but perhaps you should consider capturing into FCP analog from a DVD player and then going from there.

That TV is known to have problems in the dark areas. Check out the review on CNET.

How does it look on your monitor when set to 16×9?

Do you have a monitor that is switchable to 16×9? If not, anamorphic video will appear stretched on the vertical axis.

As I said, your thinking is correct, but he term “handles” is simply innaccurate in this case. Don’t sweat it, we’re talking about the same thing, I just want you to get your lingo technically correct.
