Cool!!! You said all the right stuff. Not everyone really understands, as we both do, that you can bring in a mixture of sources, including DV, via the component inputs through the various capture cards so long as you capture them as the same media type and format. I see that you have a handle on it all, except for this small aberation, which does sound like its just an unexplainable glitch.

Its not so much which looks better anymore, as the new Flash and QT for the web, such as Sorenson 3 and H264 all look dandy. The real question you must ask is, who is capable of looking at this stuff??? The latest version of Flash, Flash 8, requires the new Flash 8 player, which not a lot of people have yet. QT H264 is not viewable on the PC side by a lot of folks. So, what does that leave??? Sorenson 3 QT is probably the best bet now as the files are managable in size and also look very good.

Your statement above seems a bit incongruous, as “regular DV” would not be coming off of a Beta tape. Did you digitize as 8-bit or 10-bit uncompressed (720×486), or did you really digitize as DV (720×480)? What Easy Setup and sequence setting are you using?

Source timecode is not a factor — DF and NDF are routinely intercut and then recaptured without issue on a DF or NDF timeline. The one thing to be watchful of would be to let your decks play tape for a few seconds when switching between tapes from DF to NDF or vice versa, just to ensure that the timecode reader makes the switch, as sometimes they will stick in one mode or the other.

Sorry to disappoint you, but your old display card could not have displayed HD through the s-video port despite what you were told. HD video signals can only be displayed via component, DVI, or HDMI outputs.
To achieve your goal, you will need an HD capable video display card or a an HD capable I/O card, or you could possibly route through an HD deck as Ben recommended.

More than likely you’re referring to the “consolidate” feature, which is admittedly a bit risky, but just for the record, not every action in Media Manager is as horrific as you make it out to be. The “Move” feature, in which FCP rounds up every single element in a project and places it on a hard drive in the directory of your choice, actually works quite well. And, there are other feature that also work well.

The Blackmagic codecs are available for free and do not require their hardware cards to work. If I were you I would download them at http://www.decklink.com and insatll them on your MAC and redo the project on a timeline based on the proper BM codec.

Better option — get yourself a new hard drive and and build that one as your new system drive. Keep the old one for a while for good measure until you’re certain everthing works and you have everything off the old one that you need. You can boot from either drive very easiliy.
