First, you should never have begun cutting the project until you solved these issues. If you can’t solve the issues at the time of initial capture you will almost certainly be unable to recapture with any degree of accuracy.
Second, when you said, “Some tapes captured cleanly with good sync’ed sound and no video artifacts or noise. Others tapes had problems including a.)little square artifacts appearing on certain frames, b.) Entire stripes of video all askew, perhaps an interlacing problem, c.) audio out of sync., d.) no audio at all.”, you imply that you know this is a capture issue and that the tapes are all good. In fact, did you ever evaluate all the tapes to make certain the transfers from Beta were done properly?

Its a good thing you found out they didn’t have the requisite cash now rather than later. Its always a huge relief to realize you’ve just waved off a nightmare client before it got started.

Brian,
You can always just do Undos until your clips come back onto the timeline. Which brings up another point. Having come to FCP from an editing app that had unlimited undos, make certain that you up the number of undos to something like 50 or so, just in case you need to get back to previous state as in this case.

Don’t think thats possible Tony. Its been discussed here many times. Unless Apple changed their policy recently. The “crossgrade” requires sending in your discs, and there’s no way around it.

Not enough info… What card are you using to feed your video signal to your D-Beta deck? Without that kind of information anyone offering help would be simply hazarding a guess.

Why not use this as an opportunity to learn the Three Way Color Corrector? With it you can not only do what the Broadcast Safe Filter does, you can do it better.

Howie,
That function of Media Manager actually works, but it can get hung up on file names with improper characters or that use improper naming conventions. Read up on the subject in the FCP manual — following the naming rules will save you many headaches in post, and will allow you to seamlessly exchange files, EDLs, XML, and OMFs.
