Why do you need such a large jpeg or png? If it\\\’s only for approval you are fine with the screen shots, and if it\\\’s for printing (highly unlikely from a jpeg) then try lowering the resolution to 50 dpi or less.

I have also had trouble exporting large raster formats from Illustrator in the past, specially in cmyk mode, I used to export them as rgb and if I needed them in cmyk I would convert them back in Photoshop.

Regarding the archive I would strongly suggest to back up in the original Illustrator format rather than a rasterized version.

October 8, 2009 at 12:47 am in reply to: My render is taking too long

    Hi Adam, thanks for replying.

The final output is letter size, 2550 x 3300 pixels, rgb 8 bit.

I’m not using hypernurbs, but I have a lot of bubbles that are all reflecting a big object, which is a copper bullet.

Since I’ll be further editing this image in Photoshop I added all image passes to my render. GI is enabled.

I stopped the original render which included an explosion fx object when it hit 40 hours and I wasn’t able to see any progress, I started a new one this morning, but I rendered the explosion fx object separately with GI deactivated, the current render is now almost in its 10th hour and I’m not sure if it’s still moving or not. I’m attaching a screenshot of the render, one of the objects manager and one of the render multipass settings.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Hello art, thanks for your reply.

What you mention makes sense to me, SL has been reported to be still very buggy. I should have listened when somebody told me wait till several patches have been released, anyway, too late now.

However, I’d like to share this “solution” that I found in some forum that addresses this very issue.

I went to preferences>interface and in the Panels & Documents section I unchecked everything but Auto-show hidden panels and Remember panel locations, then I quitted Photoshop, I launched it again and tested it, all the mages I dragged opened at once. I checked back Auto-Collapse iconic panels, since it’s an option I find very useful and quitted again, when I launched back everything was working.

If you are importing them into Photoshop with the intention to keep them editable your file will soon become unmanageable, text is the biggest Photoshop enemy and will eat up your RAM super fast.

You can do several things, make sure the text is perfect and no typos are present, basically, that it won’t have to be edited anymore. Then import each line as a rendered object and in a separate layer, after you are done select all the layers and use the align command, that will center them according to the exact size of the overall box formed by selecting all the layers.

the second option would be to manage all text in Illustrator, (which will also have degrade performance with excessive text) and then export to psd, either with the text still editable or rasterized, your choice.

Finally, you can edit all your text in Indesign, super fast and simple, since the program is designed to work with huge loads of text and then export a pdf file, that file can be opened in photoshop and continue to be further treated in there.

October 3, 2009 at 12:52 am in reply to: How to work with Big Files

Sorry Theo, that won’t work, smart objects are not a magic shortcut to prevent degradation when scaling up, if your original content lacks the necessary resolution it will show when you scale it up.

Smart objects work when you have something large and want to try it at a small size, then if you don’t like it you can scale it back to the original size and not loose any resolution, as would happen with a raster object, but it can’t generate pixels from a small object, unless the object is an Illustrator based file.

October 3, 2009 at 12:33 am in reply to: Bending a gradient

Hi Les, thanks for your reply.

Your example is very good, is so simple and practical that made me think: Why I didn’t think of that? Clear indicator of a good idea.

Unfortunately I was in a hurry with such project so I ended up creating a gradient mesh that although took me a lot to create it came out nice, but I for sure will try your method next time.

    Thanks!

    David.

  • Hi Les, thanks for your reply.

Is your large file also a png? I am able to import psd, jpgs and tif files with no trouble whatsoever, but when I bring in a png ( I need the background to be kept transparent) then I have issues. I also need to mention that the file is very complex, maybe too much to handle for Illustrator?

Hi Les, thanks for your reply. I already tried that and didn’t work, I ended up recreating the brushes I needed. CS4, as buggy as it comes.

    Anyway, thanks for your help.

Do you have your keyboard connected through a usb hub?
Have you connected something new to your computer?

Sometimes when you have a hub sharing your keyboard and some other stuff (a wacom tablet, flash drives, external hard drives, etc) the hub is not capable to deliver enough power to all your gadgets and it will either disable one of them completely or cripple the functions of several, the same thing happened to me once, almost all my keys worked, but none of the volume ones did, I unplugged something from my hub, restarted my computer and everything was back to normal. The fact that is happening to you with two different versions (actually two different pieces of software tells me that the problem might not be Illustrator related, still, you should check your keyboard shortcuts just to see if they haven’t been changed lately.

  • From looking at your screenshots it seems that the name of your main file and the passes is the same, if that\’s the case then the pass image is overwriting your main footage and AE is unable to find it because it is non existent.
Try naming your passes with a word before, \”passes_whatever\” and see if this time you get the mov file.

The twirly in your multipass options tab is closed, are you sure you need to render extra passes? Perhaps only rendering the mov file would suffice.
