There is a thread going on apple.com for this same author/post. Ya’ll might want to check it before posting a response here so we’re not simply duplicating everything.

There is no compelling reason to upgrade your OS. You gain nothing tangible in FCP4.5.

But if you feel you MUST have Dashboard, Spotlight, improved winderz networking and the new iChat, be sure to do your homework, prepare your drive and follow the instructions.

Over on apple.com, we’re getting really sick of the “I’m sorry I went to Tiger” posts which outnumber the successful upgrade posts.

May 4, 2005 at 2:52 pm in reply to: Final Effects Complete in FCP

My opinion and experience are quite different. If you do not own these filters, do not buy them. I think FEC is a complete rip off at the price those rat rascals at M100 are charging. Editorially speaking, of course, just my opinion. Could be my deep loathing of Media 100 or my particular hardware configuration. Umm, either one, you pick.

Yes, they take forever to load into FCP. The copy protection scam that M100 uses seems to interfere with the filters loading. I have not been able to get this figured out. Each and every one of them will crash my copy of FCP4.5 making the FEC set not only useless but unspeakably dangerous.

I still have FEC installed for use with After Effects where they present different problems on my system. Media 100 never really improved on these fabulous filters. The Time set, for instance, still crashes AE after ten years. The manual M100 hacked together was a huge step down from the original. They eliminated dozens of pages describing advanced capabilities and completely ignored the hidden features. These screwups suggested to me (a guy who has owned every rev of the original Cycore FE and SE products before ICE and M100 grabbed them) that Media 100’s FEC team knew nothing about their product. They were apparently charged with getting the product out the door so it could generate cash.

Tiger and FCP5 might change some of this but I don’t care. I’ve got AE6.5+ on the way and it contains updates to Cycore’s brilliantly cool and subtly retro filter sets. There are many other sources for interesting filters for FCP.

  • Welcome to the family. Lots of us disaffected Media 100 users here, as you see. I bailed about three years ago so I don’t know what features and capabilities you’re giving up. You will soon forget them, though.

Shop carefully for a realtime full rez solution that you can live with. Not having the hardware codec and realtime alpha support (on lesser machines) is a drag.

I think I speak for the rest of the ex-M100 folks: Very sad to see that ship go down but I don’t think anyone is too sorry. Mostly we’re just glad they won’t be getting any more of OUR money.

I think you’d need one of those Magma expansion chassis.

Please come back and tell us if you were ever successful at this.
A VAR might be able to help, too.

  • > It’s rare indeed I find a comment from you which I would contest. While this is inherently true, depending on your needs, but software and hardware make a huge impact on what you are able to accomplish for your client << You're running a better record than I am, buddy. I cannot recall disagreeing about anything with you; must have been something. That's all I know how to do is shout, Chris, and I'm practicing for the onslaught of questions from disaffected Avid users. Using FCP will not likely make any of them better editors. However, while cutting film projects as a student, I didn't find editing on the flatbed made any difference at all in how I would have cut on Ye Olde Rewinds. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: "For crying out loud, read the freakin' manual."

April 29, 2005 at 1:38 pm in reply to: final cut playing twice the speed

    > When using the decklink software it is capturing fine < Contradictory; if it's fine, why is it playing at twice speed? How do you know it's fine? Does it play fine in some other app? So you're saying that a clip that is ten seconds long exhausts the video media in five seconds while the audio continues for the full 10? What do you see when you run out of video? What happens if you unlink the clip and delete the audio from the timeline? Try doubling the time of the clip, what does it look like? What are the properties of the clip? Did you actually capture video at 15fps? What else have you tried so we don't waste our time making unnecessary suggestions? bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: "For crying out loud, read the freakin' manual."

It’s a known problem and it’s fairly well-documented. Media captured with earlier versions is a bit dodgy.

    1. Is avid faster at rendering then final cut pro with the mojo or is it slower?
< What's an Avid? Depends on the machine you're using, the effects you've applied and the format you are using. >
    2. The final Cut Pro top of the line suite costs now only $1,299. Avid is selling their power pack for 3,495.
    < Okay, that's a no brainer. >
    3. What is better, PC or Mac. I currently have a PC but I would be willing to Move to the Mac if it is better for editing.
< Asking this question of Macintosh users is a waste of bandwidth. >
    4. Dose Avid DV express pro have 5.1 sound.
< Dunno, you'd have to post that question in a Avid forum. Are you sure you need 5.1? Will your clients pay for it? Do you have the sound creation moxie to use 5.1 well? >
Avid Just bought out pinnacle and 6.1 has to many bugs in its software to upgrade yet.
    < Then don't buy the upgrade. >
I am thinking to move to a company that has some staying power.
< Apple? HAven't you been listening to the tech know-it-alls for the last 20 years? Apple is going under any day now. They cannot possibly survive. >
I am also looking for a system that will allow me to be creative and also to work fast.
< That's a function of knowing how to use your tools and being good at what you do. It has NOTHING to do do with the stuff you buy. Nothing. To believe software will make you a better editor is silly. >
Plus I would like to get the best deal price wise that I can.
< Yes, wouldn't we all? That's a function of how much effort you are willing to put into your research. You plot your needs against your budget and your dreams and then figure out how you're oging to pay for it and how much the money will cost you. Those are all decisions you and your accountant must make over coffee or vodka. > Maybe going avid or final cut pro or PC or MAC is like apples and organges. But which one is the best one for the money and the speed?< Get the biggest and baddest Macintosh you can afford and buy the FCP Suite. Your total investment will be anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 depending buying used or new, storage, RAM, extra software, and some new toys. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: "For crying out loud, read the freakin' manual."

April 26, 2005 at 3:19 pm in reply to: Rumor Apple to introduce new PMs by Wednesday

Doesn’t look like much of a price change but you get much more machine. Slightly larger drives and the dual-layer (dual side?) burner. No additional RAM and I can’t find specs on the video cards.

It will all be academic tomorrow, just got this just a few minutes ago from Think Secret:

According to sources, new Apple Power Macs have already begun shipping to select Apple retail stores in the United States. The models spotted were dual 2GHz, 2.3GHz, and 2.7GHz. All three versions reportedly sport new dual-layer DVD burners. The dual 2GHz configuration reportedly includes 512 ram, a 160 hard disk, and a 128MB ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card.
Apple is expected to make CPU-related announcements as early as Tuesday (though one source says the new Power Macs may debut on a Wednesday) . Reports also suggest the company may be in the process of updating the majority of its CPU offerings to include Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger as the default operating system. While iMacs and eMacs are now reflecting ship times of 5-7 business days, the remainder of Apple’s CPU product lines are also showing extended times today (of 1-3 business days). Apple last introduced new CPU hardware on January 31st when it announced faster Power Book G4 laptops.
