No, but it doesn’t seem to matter much. FCP currently only sees 2 gigs but that’s not to say your other apps wouldn’t benefit and FCP5.5 or 6 might change all that.

  • We had several posts on this topic as 4.0 got updated. I don’t know how far back you wish to search but you’ll find plenty of inconclusive reading. I only had it happen to me once but there have been many victims. We haven’t seen a post like this in many months.

The discussion on apple.com led some of us to speculate 4.5 was running errant Media Manager code and actually deleting the files at the Finder’s top level. They’re gone. Poof. No file recovery program could find them, no directory reconstruction program could find them. Very disturbing. No cure, no clue, no words of encouragement. Sorry we can’t offer more than commiseration.

did anyone hear back from robin on that thread?

  • [Kevin Monahan] “I just did a test. Import with Alpha is working just fine. So something is probably wrong with your installation of FCP. Good Luck.”

I have no problem with alphas on my system but I don’t see how the installation of FCP5 could be at fault. Seems that something this fundamental would also mean lots of other stuff was severely busted; the app wouldn’t work at all.

Anyway, I can’t confirm a problem, soprry. I’ve got a pretty good installation of FCP5 on my old Quicksilver which seems to piss off lots of people.

Could we maybe get an update on this issue? Did robin reinstall?

It’s easy to see if the Io codecs support alphas, look for a setting that says Millions+.

I’ll go out a limb and suggest you’re looking at the problem the wrong way. You need more drive space and a change in your workflow, not a reduced quality codec. Do your precomps and previews at lower rez, discard bad files or offload them to DVD-ROM. Go buy a little 100 or 200 gig FW drive for your AE renders.

  • We have see that the alpha sensing in FCP5 is wonky, doesn’t always get it right. Did you try to manually set the alpha? Did you try to view the alpha in the Browser?
I’m using alpha movies from AE and LT and Motion without the any problems in FCP5/Tiger. but I do have to set the alpha interpretation manually sometimes.

June 28, 2005 at 3:17 pm in reply to: Need help recording live to DSR-11, then into FCP

[jhwilson] “This appears to work fine, but when I go back and check my 1 hour tape, there is always some skipped frames in the tape. I then have to capture the whole tape again which takes another hour.
    I am using a 1.8ghz G5 mac with 2gb RAM.
I am needing a proven solution from someone here. Is the 1.8 G5 just not fast enough to capture an hour at once. Does the stream coming into the DSR-11 need to have a timecode added to it.
Does the DSR-11 add timecode to the stream as it records and can that timecode be exported via firewire to the mac?”

The proven solution is to do this properly with two decks or maybe with a FW recorder but the jury is still out on those rascals.
Forget trying to capture one hour of live stuff directly to the computer. What you’re probably seeing is hits on the OS and normal drive routines that somehow affect write buffer. You can try to tweak your Mac system prefs to eliminate all background operations but this is still a bad idea simply because we know recording to a conventional hard drive is full of holes and risks over which you have no control whatsoever and you cannot see the problems until you are done which is the wrong time to be finding out it didn’t work.
We have seen only a few successful stories about recording live to a Macintosh. We have never seen a post about someone recording to tape and being upset about the results.
Recording to a tape machine has literally no risks.

If you simply MUST have a digital file that you do not have to ingest, you must move to a more viable and far more expensive solution like maybe an Xserve and some super-tolerant RAIDs. Far cheaper to just record to tape and capture.

LT still doesn’t support audio so the answer is yes and no. Build the effect, export it to FCP, add your sound effects, export it using the Animation codec to preserve the alpha. Each time you use the clip, the sfx will be there but no magic involved.

There was a problem with the Q function a few months ago, Curtis and Ron indicated it had been fixed. I was using it a few weeks ago but now it seems to have been busted again with my particular software setup: Safari2+, Tiger. curtis usually writes for maximum compatibility and minimum Microsoft Explorer exclusivity. I bet it gets fixed in a few more weeks. Be sure to visit the Forum forum and talk with the webheads who run the code.

when you consider that time alteration has been around since AE3 and existed in one forma or another in all NLEs for more than 10 years, FCP’s Time Remap is incredibly lame. There is no excuse for the paradigm or the interface (or, for that matter, the terrible rendering) but we’re stuck with it. If time remapping is important to you workflow and your client satisfaction, you will need another tool besides FCP.
